Music Department
Creativity and beauty originate with God. As His creatures—made in His image—it is natural that we have an innate need to create and appreciate things of beauty. Participation in and enjoyment of music contributes to the fulfillment of this basic need for a human aesthetic experience.
Yet the study of music challenges one to go beyond perception of beauty. Students of music learn discipline, develop motivation, and acquire skills in time management, critical listening, and problem solving. Musicians experience team playing and develop a sense of camaraderie.
The faculty of the Department of Music encourage and provide opportunity for all to experience the joy of music and music-making.
Bachelor of Music curricula are designed to provide a comprehensive exposure to and experience with the performance, history, and theory of music. Students also receive hands-on supervised teaching experience in studio or classroom teaching.
Bachelor of Arts/Science curricula are for students wishing to pursue concerted college-level study in music within a liberal arts context.
Non-music majors may take courses in music or participate in music lessons or ensembles for personal enrichment as well as for credit towards graduation requirements. Please check General Education section and course descriptions in the undergraduate bulletin for further clarification.
The Andrews University Department of Music has been a full member of the National Association of Schools of Music since 1964. Music majors may choose to join the student chapter of Music Educators National Conference as well as the Department of Music Society of Student Musicians. Selected students are chosen yearly for induction into Pi Kappa Lambda, the national music honor society.
