Liberal Arts Degrees
Major in Music (Bachelor of Arts)—57 credits: A liberal arts degree allowing for pursuit of a broad range of interests while still majoring in music. Very viable as a double major. Requires a minor area if no double major is chosen. The 57 credits include MUCT 111, 112, 113, 211, 212, 213; MUHL 455, 456, 457; MURE 420; 12 credits of performance in one area which includes a 1 or 2-credit recital or project; 6 credits of ensemble; 2 credits of electives; Piano Proficiency. Required cognates: HIST 104 or 105; PHYS 405. NOTE: At least one course other than ensemble or applied music must be taken in residence.
Major in Elementary Music Education (Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science)—55 credits: A liberal arts degree for those interested in teaching pre-junior high level. Requires state teacher certification. The 55 credits include MUCT 111, 112, 113, 211; MUCT 301, 302; MUED 458; MUHL 456, 457; MUED 375-05; 6 credits of performance in piano, 4 credits of performance in voice; 6 credits of ensemble; *6 credits of electives; Piano Proficiency. Required cognates; HIST 104 or 105; PHYS 405. NOTE: General Education courses determine whether the degree is a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science.
Minor in Music—30 credits: Option for students wishing to pursue personal interests in music. The 30 credits include MUCT 111, 112, 113, 211; MUHL 456, 457; 6 credits of performance in one area; 3 credits of ensemble; Piano Proficiency.
Minor in Elementary Music Education—37 credits: The minor for the above-listed Bachelor of Arts/Science in Elementary Education curriculum. The 37 credits include MUCT 111, 112, 113; MUED 301, 458; MUHL 456; MUED 375-05; 3 credits of performance in piano, 2 credits of performance in voice; 6 credits of ensemble; *4 credits of electives; Piano Proficiency.
*The student is encouraged to obtain elective credit through attendance at professional workshops and seminars (e.g., International Music Festival at Andrews University) for which college credit is available. Students must check the validity of a particular festival with their adviser prior to attendance.
Professional Degrees
Bachelor of Music—74/75 credits: The following core courses are required for all Bachelor of Music degrees: 74/75 credits including MUCT 111, 112, 113, 211, 212, 213, 400, 454, 470; MUED 301, 302; MUHL 455, 456, 457; MURE 420; *12 credits of ensemble; Piano Proficiency. Required cognates: HIST 104 or 105; PHYS 405.
*Note: 11 credits of ensemble required for Bachelor of Music in Music Education majors.
Performance (Bachelor of Music): A degree for those who wish to concentrate on performance and whose career goals include a focus toward performance and studio or collegiate teaching and graduate school. Consult with department chair for areas of availability. In addition to the core credits listed above, 48 credits are to be chosen from the following areas: Applied Music; Language (Voice majors only); Literature of the Major Area; Music Electives; Pedagogy of the Major Area; Teaching Practicum.
General Requirements
Music Education (Bachelor of Music): A degree designated for students seeking careers as certified teachers in pre-collegiate denominational or public schools. Students receive this degree with an emphasis in instrumental, keyboard, or vocal education. Requires state certification. During their first year, students must make application and have annual advising sessions with the Certification Clerk in the School of Education. NOTE: Students must check the current School of Education Bulletin to keep abreast of the most recent requirements. Students normally spend five years in residence to complete the requirements for the Bachelor of Music in Music Education.
Instrumental Emphasis: 41 credits including MUED 304, 305, 375-02 -06, 458, 459; 13 credits major performance, 4 credits minor performance which includes a 1- or 2-credit recital; ensemble credit must be in an instrumental ensemble.
Keyboard Emphasis: 42/43 credits including either MUED 304 plus MUED 375-02-05 or MUED 305 and 475 plus 4 credits of applied voice (MUPF 164-464); MUED 420 or 478, 458, 459; MUHL 480 or 484; 13 credits major performance, 4 credits minor performance which includes a 1- or 2-credit recital (piano majors must choose organ as their minor instrument and vice versa); 3 credits of ensemble must be in MUPF 210.
Vocal Emphasis: 42 credits including MUED 304, 305, 375-02-05, 458, 459, 475; 13 credits major performance, 4 credits minor performance which includes a 1- or 2-credit recital; ensemble credit must be in a choral ensemble.
