AU PHYSICS ENTERPRISES - Business and Production Coordinator

Qualifications summary

Master’s level coursework in business or science and two years’ experience assisting at least two employers who are willing to provide a recommendation and are academic faculty, department chairs, or directors in laboratory and office settings.  Manufacturing and other non-academic scientific experience will be considered.  A baccalaureate degree without graduate coursework may be sufficient when accompanied by extensive experience with scientific equipment and involvement in administration.


Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Duties and responsibilities



  1. Initiate and develop strategic planning concepts, data, policies, & materials Total=35%


    • recommending, managing, and leading marketing activities at trade events and conventions and determining and launching appropriate print and other advertising, branding, and websites 10%


    • analyzing financial statements, inventories, production cost reports, and revenue reports and preparing synopses for inclusion in the annual report and consideration in the preparation of the annual budget10%


    • organizing management team meetings to address measures to optimize efficiency,increase product value, decrease product failure, and vision new processes and products 5%


    • monitoring customer satisfaction and quality control processes5%


    • ensuring efficient and safe production, storage, and communication with regards to hazardous materials in compliance with MIOSHA and other agencies coordinated by Campus Safety and the University’s Radiation Safety Officer 5%




  2. Oversee assembly of electronic and mechanical products  Total=35%


    • monitoring and updating inventories; ordering parts and materials; documenting processes; and maintaining production records10%


    • tracking purchases and student labor and determining production costs10%


    • orienting, training, supervising, and mentoring assemblers; submitting payroll; and managing student access to production areas 5%


    • coordinating and scheduling R&D projects and group work  5%


    • supervising the packaging of finished goods and preparation for shipment  5%




  3. Manage the business processes associated with AUPE  Total=30%


    • providing interfaces for student and staff labor, customers and business partners; the Physics faculty, University departments , the AUPE Board and other stakeholders via personal, phone, texting, fax, email, social media, and website communication  10%


    • synchronizing manufacturing processes with “just in time” flows of materials and parts, workforce levels, distributer needs and expectations, and shipment schedules10%


    • preparing, sending, and organizing customer invoices; planning, producing and sending user manuals;providing customer service; and processing returns  7%

    • liaising with HR on student employment; the internal auditor on best practices; the physics office on space, services, and budget; and the Chair of the Board on policy  3%





Supervisory responsibilities

Direct supervision of 10-15 student workers in the assembly rooms, including planning, assigning, directing, reporting, and evaluating assembly work as well as addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Technical competencies

Effective use of a PC with Microsoft Office (WORD, EXCEL, OUTLOOK, ACCESS, etc), Adobe InDesign,  PhotoShop and Acrobat, and other business applications.  Website and other graphic design as needed.  Skill and experience preferred, but ability to learn on the job is acceptable.

Physical demands

Regularly sitting, standing, and walking.  Using arms to reach above and below waist level and lift and carry 30-50 lbs; hands to finger, handle, grasp, and place materials; vision to recognize customers, student workers, staff co-workers, read written materials, select materials and place them appropriately; speech and hearing to talk on the phone and in person.  Reasonable accommodations will be made in keeping with AUPE’s core mission when suitable alternatives can be found. 

Work environment

The AU Physics Enterprises Office, HYH108, a windowed, ground floor office which is wheelchair assessible.  May be shared with another staff member.  Nearby assembly work areas and storage assessible only by stairs.  Other assembly areas and receiving dock assessible by stairs or elevator.  Low to moderate noise levels.
