ARCHITECTURE - Workshop Supervisor

Position summary

Assists the professors with all classes using the wood shop. Keeps a safe work environment, maintains all equipment in good working order, keeps the shop clean and orderly, supervises the student workers, assists students with their projects, and maintains a supply of basic materials.

Qualifications summary

College or university degree in Industrial Technology or a related field; or two to four years related experience and/or training in woodworking, carpentry, house construction, related trades, with some experience in welding, sheet metal, and metalworking; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 


Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Duties and responsibilities


  1. Ensure a safe work environment:

    1. Teach all beginning students basic shop safety.

    2. Require all machine operators to wear eye protection and use all appropriate safety equipment.

    3. Maintain all equipment in good working order.  Make all repairs promptly.

    4. Keep all cutting tools sharp.

    5. Encourage students to use hearing protection on a regular basis.



  2. Keep the shop neat and orderly.

    1. Verify that all tools are in their places at the end of the day.

    2. Maintain the tool board so that all tools and their storage place is easily identified.

    3. Maintain an adequate supply of materials that meets the needs of the student projects, and do special orders for materials not regularly kept in stock.



  3. Assist students with their projects.

  4. Assist professors with all courses using the woodshop and all related tools and equipment, serving in the role of Teaching Assistant in the following courses:

    1. Furniture Design

    2. Advanced Furniture Design

    3. Tiny House

    4. Basic Design II



  5. Perform other small-scale building repair and improvements in the SAAD as assigned.



Supervisory responsibilities

Supervise student workers in the following tasks:

  1. Sweep the floor daily.

  2. Empty waste containers when full.

  3. Empty dust collectors when full.

  4. Keep tables and machines clean.

  5. Keep wood and other supplies neat and orderly.

Education and/or Experience
College or university degree in Industrial Technology or a related field; or two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Language Skills                                                                    
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general technical documents, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Mathematical Skills                                                          
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability                                                               
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Must feel and act comfortably with all the people who interact with the woodshop and in all related courses where assisting other professors, including students, faculty, and staff.  Must have a warm and friendly personality.  Must be willing to help "clients" according to their needs.  Must be willing to train and supervise students, and also interact on a professional level with faculty and staff.  Must be a team player and fit comfortably with the school atmosphere and philosophy of advocacy.

Technical competencies

Equipment/Software Used
None.
Woodworking
Must have an advanced knowledge of woodworking in order to assist students on their projects. Must an have advanced knowledge and ability in hand and machine tool use, maintenance and repair, and the ability to maintain all tools and machines in good and safe working order.
Metalworking
Must have a basic knowledge in sheet metal work, soldering, and welding. Needs to be able to demonstrate these skills to students.
Carpentry
Must have advanced knowledge of current wood-frame house construction through all stages from rough framing to finish carpentry. Must have an awareness of the current building codes. Needs to be able to demonstrate these skills to students.
Electrical
Must have advanced knowledge of residential wiring practices and techniques, and be able to demonstrate electrical installations according to current building codes.
Painting
Must have advanced knowledge and skills in painting and other wood and materials finishes for furniture and residential house construction, and demonstrate their use.
Plumbing
Must have advanced knowledge and skills in residential plumbing, and the ability to demonstrate plumbing installation to current building code standards.

Must feel and act comfortably with all the people who interact with the woodshop and in all related courses where assisting other professors, including students, faculty, and staff.  Must have a warm and friendly personality.  Must be willing to help "clients" according to their needs.  Must be willing to train and supervise students, and also interact on a professional level with faculty and staff.  Must be a team player and fit comfortably with the school atmosphere and philosophy of advocacy.

The work environment is a typical woodshop with multiple machines running simultaneously. The shop can be quite active with 10 - 15 students working at the same time. It can be quite dusty at times. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, and on occasion very loud, exceeding 80db.
