Adventist Forum presents Dr. Berecz

Angel Bones in Unexpected Places

presented by

John Berecz, Ph.D.
Clinical Psychologist,
Buchanan, MI

Sabbath Afternoon at 3:30 pm
January 25, 2014

Chan Shun Hall
Andrews University
Berrien Springs, MI

Dr. Berecz is a clinical psychologist with forty years experience as a therapist, university professor, and author. His Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology is from Indiana University, Bloomington. His internship was at Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Boston; a Harvard Medical School teaching hospital. For 37 years he taught psychology at Andrews University, retiring in 2008.His 2009  textbook  Theories of Personality is now being used in college classrooms across the country. In addition he has published a half dozen other books.

He is the father of three grown sons (a veterinarian, a judge, and a school psychologist) and is married to Deborah Berecz, a Collaborative lawyer.

Dr. Berecz has provided the following overview of his presentation:

Angel Bones in Unexpected Places
In a recent interview with Time magazine, J K Rowling described story as “making meaning out of chaos.” Angel Bones is story—my story—about finding meaning in chaos. It’s more about “being found” than finding. It’s about how Sara (my moniker for Spirit) found me and infused my personal chaos with meaning. Angel Bones is also about how forgiveness saved my life and rehabilitated my self esteem.

In sum: three themes co-mingle in this personal narrative: Spirit, forgiveness, and self-esteem.

La Leche League Updates

Due to changes in the schedule for the SJ Public Library, we will need to change our meeting time.  This may work out better for many of you, since our meetings can be late for little ones.

As of this month, our meetings will be the 2nd Tues of the month from 530p - 730p.  Don't feel that you have to stay that entire time - moms can flow in and out as family needs are more important.

The schedule for 2014 will be as follows:

January 14
February 11
March 11
April 8
May 13
June 10
July 8
August 12
September 9
October 14
November 11
December 16

If there is bad weather, and you do not feel safe to drive (or do not wish to bring your little one out) stay home.  Babies, toddlers and older children are welcome, as long as they are tended to when they need it (we love kids!)  We also welcome the support people in your life (spouse, mother, friends), or anyone interested in the wonderful benefits of breastfeeding.

If there are runny noses, coughs, fever, etc, please do not bring it with you.  Especially now, with the flu in full force.  We want to make this a healthy and safe environment for everyone.

Moms who need help, or have questions can always email us at or call us:

Bobby & Michelle- New nest fund

During the early morning hours on January 5, 2014 Bobby and Michelle Murray, both recent alumni of Andrews University, lost their home and car in a fire that engulfed everything that they own. Thankfully, they were not in their home at the time and Molly (their dog) was safely with them too. Unfortunately, they did not yet have insurance on their home and car and could really use our help to get back on their feet.

If you can donate anything at all, please do.  Even $5 would help.

Jan. Meeting of Berrien Springs Camera Club

The Berrien Springs Camera Club will meet on Tues., Jan. 7, at 7 p.m. in the Berrien Springs Community Library at Cass and Union. Notice the change from its usual first Wednesday of the month, due to the holiday on Jan. 1 and the library not being available on the following Wednesday.

The program will be presented by Rob Shellhamer, the treasurer of the club. His topic will be Flash Photography. He says, “I will be covering both built-in and camera flash, but not strobe lights (though many of the same principles would apply).” He adds, “There will be a short bit on theory and technique, but mostly just playing with the camera and flash. Participants should feel free to bring theirs and play along or just sit and enjoy.”

Shellhamer, an avid photographer, has been a member of the Berrien Springs Camera Club for six years. He enjoys a wide variety of kinds of photography and enjoys collecting gear for it.  He not only is a skilled photographer, but also has the ability to explain techniques in a step-by-step manner.

All are welcome. Refreshments will be served.

Veterans Day Event in Buchanan

This year's Veterans Day program sponsored by the Buchanan American Legion features a look at another aspect of World War II history. While American servicemen and women were fighting overseas, this area was playing host to hundreds of German prisoners of war.

Retired Western Michigan University professor Howard Poole will speak three times in Buchanan as part of this year's Veterans Day activities. Poole will speak at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11 at the Buchanan American Legion, at 7 p.m. that night at Buchanan High School and the next morning at 9 a.m. to students at BHS.

Poole is a Sister Lakes resident and retired from Western Michigan in 2004. Since then, he has researched a variety of topics including the history of the Sister Lakes area and what happened when German POWs were brought into Southwest Michigan to work on area farms during World War II.

Poole's research has uncovered how area farms used German prisoners of war for farm labor during the war and what life was like for the half million German POWs shipped to the United States during that time period. He has also found information about a Japanese American internment camp in Southwest Michigan.

Past Veterans Day programs have given people the chance to hear about other aspects of World War II history with speakers coming in to talk on topics ranging from the role of women in the war and the service of African Americans and Native Americans. The legion has also brought in survivors of major battles and massacres to speak on Veterans Day.

We especially need teams in St. Joseph, Dowagiac, and Cassopolis, but could also use one more team in Marcellus and one more in Coloma.

To sign up and volunteer, please visit United Way’s website:   Click on the “Days of Action” tab at the top and click on “Senior Day of Action”.

Monthly Camera Club Meeting

Berrien Springs Camera Club Monthly Meeting
Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m.
Berrien Springs Public Library

As usual, there will be two select topics for the month. In addition, “Nature” is always an acceptable category, as are “Open” (any subject) and “Portraits.” The two select categories for the October competition are “Action” and “Cracks and Crevices.” “Nature” photos are to show nothing from human hands (no wires, fences, cultivated flowers, etc.). Thus a member can submit images in any of five categories or a combination thereof, though extra points are given for acceptances in the two select categories.

Prints, at least 5" x 7" in size, should be mounted, with the title and photographer's name on the back. Digital submissions, however, need to be sent in ahead, with instructions for submitting them on the club’s blog site:
Any member may submit up to 10 projected images and/or 10 prints for the competition. Pictures are shown one at a time, and three judges score them by machine. The total points determine whether a photo is rated “honor,” “acceptance,” or “out.”  From the “honors,” a Slide-of-the-Month and a Print-of-the-Month are selected.  All are welcome, either to observe or to join. Refreshments will be served.

Executive Coach Sam McKee Featured Presenter
at 2013 GODencounters Conference

Young Adults are especially invited to the 2013 GODencounters Conference, September 19-21, 2013, held at Arlington Seventh-day Adventist Church, 4409 Pleasantview Drive, Arlington, TX 76017.  Opening night is Thursday, September 19th at 7:00 PM, featuring pastor and executive coach, Sam McKee. The conference culminates with a free concert, 7:00 PM, Saturday evening, September 21st with The Digital Age.  For more information go to

From Portland, Oregon, McKee has spoken to youth and young adults in colleges and churches in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Denver, Chicago, and Australia. He's coached leaders from Columbia University, Google, Microsoft and Facebook. A former newspaper reporter and party guy, Sam became a Christian during his college years through a homeless man and an energetic African-American Church near Chicago. Now he loves to share the joy he’s found in Christ with anyone who’s searching for something more.

Sam served as a youth pastor and lead snowboarder at churches in Colorado and California before becoming the senior pastor of the Sunnyvale Adventist Church (CA), which serves the people of Silicon Valley. His church was full of young adults, many of whom worked at high-tech companies like Google, Apple and Intel. The church launched 36 Life Groups around the Bay Area and touched many lives. In 2008, he moved to the Portland, Oregon area to plant a church for people who are far from church but hungry for God.

In his free time, Sam enjoys hockey, football, snowboarding and especially hanging out with his surfer/pastor/actress wife. They keep busy rafting, snowboarding and exploring the beautiful Northwest with their two children, who have more energy than the sun.

GODencounters Conference is free and open to the community, sponsored by Younger Generation Church, the vibrant young adult ministry of the Arlington Seventh-day Adventist Church.  For information go to
