Michiana Adventist Forum meeting

A.G. Daniells:
Lessons in Leadership

presented by

Dr. Benjamin McArthur
Professor of History
at
Southern Adventist University

Sabbath, April 12, 3:30 p.m.

Chan Shun Hall
Andrews University
Berrien Springs, MI

McArthur is a graduate of Andrews University. He subsequently earned MA and PhD degrees from the University of Chicago. Following graduate school, he joined the faculty at Southern where he taught history for 30 years.

He then spent three years at Southwestern Adventist University where he served as academic dean. He returned to the classroom and to Southern Adventist University in 2012. His primary teaching interests are in American history, from colonial times through the early twentieth century. He also enjoys writing screenplays and has written two books on the American theater.

In recent years his scholarly interest has focused on the Adventist church. He is currently involved in writing a biography of A.G. Daniells, the longest-serving president of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, who is the subject of his presentation.

The following information from Wikipedia provides a brief background on A.G. Daniells:

Arthur Grosvenor Daniells (1858–1935) was a Seventh-day Adventist minister and administrator, most notably the longest serving president of the General Conference.

He served as secretary to James and Ellen White for one year. He later worked as an evangelist and was one the pioneers of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the South Pacific. He became the president of the Australasia Union Conference, and then the president of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists (1901 to 1922). He led the church in developing a new level of church government, the union conference. He was the first chairperson of the Ellen G. White Estate (1915 to 1935).

He was not reelected in 1922. In his retirement Daniells formed the Seventh-day Adventist Ministerial Association and Ministry magazine.

To provide foster kids with this comforting pillow, a Pillow Drive is under way to collect NEW Pillows and Pillowcases.

Pillows and Pillowcases can be dropped in decorated boxes at the following locations:

  • Village Do It Hardware,

Berrien Springs Camera Club April Meeting

                                                        Berrien Springs Camera Club

The Berrien Springs Camera Club will meet on Wednesday, Apr. 2, at 7 p.m. in its usual venue, the Berrien Springs Public Library at Cass (Old 31) and Union.

This month’s program consists of a competition of prints and digital images submitted by members. The selected topics for the month include:

  1. Things in the Sky and
  2. Vents/Grates/Manhole Covers.

Three additional categories are appropriate for all of our competitions:

  1.  Nature (nothing domesticated, nothing of a human origin),
  2.  Portraits, and
  3.  Open (any other subject).

The second select category will certainly challenge the creativity of members. How many people sally forth to take beautiful photos of manhole covers? But sometimes a topic is chosen precisely to challenge creativity. It may be surprising to see what some members submit. And those who can’t warm up to that subject can always opt for Things in the Sky. This is their chance to show that unique cloud formation, balloons, airplanes, skyscrapers, treetops, fireworks, or almost anything else they can think of shooting against the sky.

Prints, at least 5" x 7" in size, should be mounted, with the title and photographer's name on the back. Instructions for submitting images in digital form are available on the club’s blog: http://photoclub.berrienspringsmi.us/http://berrienspringscameraclub.blogspot.com/

All are welcome, either to observe or to join. Anyone who wishes to join may submit photos to the competition, up to 10 projected images and/or 10 prints. Refreshments will be served.

Berrien Springs Camera Club March Meeting

The Berrien Springs Camera Club will meet on Wednesday, Mar. 5, at 7 p.m. in the Berrien Springs Community Library at Cass and Union.

Cheryl Thomas, president, states that for the March meeting members are invited to submit up to 5 digital images for projection and critique. They may wish to turn in pictures rejected by judges during recent competitions.

The club’s monthly meetings alternate between competitions, with three judges at each one, and other kinds of presentations. Members always notice how very subjective judging can be: Sometimes an image that is “out” one month may be resubmitted in another competition, with different judges, and receive “honor” status.

The March meeting will feature some of these rejected images and let the whole group try to decide why they were not accepted and how they could be improved. Submission guidelines can be found on the club’s Web site

The public is welcome. To submit pictures, one must be a member. Refreshments are served at each meeting.

Media on the Brain

Media on the Brain
We see it all around us. Hollywood, popular music, TV, video gaming, spectator sports, e-relationships, and pornography are saturating the lives of God’s professed people. But what does the latest science say about the mind-altering effects of 21st century media? And what is the spiritual agenda in the entertainment and advertising industries? Join this seminar on March 1, presented by author, speaker, and teacher, Scott Ritsema, Media on the Brain has been featured on satellite TV and radio, as well as live appearances throughout North America.  Join us at the Village Church March 1, 8:30 and 11:20 a.m. and at 2:30 p.m.  Village SDA Church Sanctuary for a fast-paced day of seminars on this vital topic.

Adventist Forum presents Dr. Berecz

Angel Bones in Unexpected Places

presented by

John Berecz, Ph.D.
Clinical Psychologist,
Buchanan, MI

Sabbath Afternoon at 3:30 pm
January 25, 2014

Chan Shun Hall
Andrews University
Berrien Springs, MI

Dr. Berecz is a clinical psychologist with forty years experience as a therapist, university professor, and author. His Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology is from Indiana University, Bloomington. His internship was at Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Boston; a Harvard Medical School teaching hospital. For 37 years he taught psychology at Andrews University, retiring in 2008.His 2009  textbook  Theories of Personality is now being used in college classrooms across the country. In addition he has published a half dozen other books.

He is the father of three grown sons (a veterinarian, a judge, and a school psychologist) and is married to Deborah Berecz, a Collaborative lawyer.

Dr. Berecz has provided the following overview of his presentation:

Angel Bones in Unexpected Places
In a recent interview with Time magazine, J K Rowling described story as “making meaning out of chaos.” Angel Bones is story—my story—about finding meaning in chaos. It’s more about “being found” than finding. It’s about how Sara (my moniker for Spirit) found me and infused my personal chaos with meaning. Angel Bones is also about how forgiveness saved my life and rehabilitated my self esteem.

In sum: three themes co-mingle in this personal narrative: Spirit, forgiveness, and self-esteem.

La Leche League Updates

Due to changes in the schedule for the SJ Public Library, we will need to change our meeting time.  This may work out better for many of you, since our meetings can be late for little ones.

As of this month, our meetings will be the 2nd Tues of the month from 530p - 730p.  Don't feel that you have to stay that entire time - moms can flow in and out as family needs are more important.

The schedule for 2014 will be as follows:

January 14
February 11
March 11
April 8
May 13
June 10
July 8
August 12
September 9
October 14
November 11
December 16

If there is bad weather, and you do not feel safe to drive (or do not wish to bring your little one out) stay home.  Babies, toddlers and older children are welcome, as long as they are tended to when they need it (we love kids!)  We also welcome the support people in your life (spouse, mother, friends), or anyone interested in the wonderful benefits of breastfeeding.

If there are runny noses, coughs, fever, etc, please do not bring it with you.  Especially now, with the flu in full force.  We want to make this a healthy and safe environment for everyone.

Bobby & Michelle- New nest fund

During the early morning hours on January 5, 2014 Bobby and Michelle Murray, both recent alumni of Andrews University, lost their home and car in a fire that engulfed everything that they own. Thankfully, they were not in their home at the time and Molly (their dog) was safely with them too. Unfortunately, they did not yet have insurance on their home and car and could really use our help to get back on their feet.

If you can donate anything at all, please do.  Even $5 would help.

Jan. Meeting of Berrien Springs Camera Club

The Berrien Springs Camera Club will meet on Tues., Jan. 7, at 7 p.m. in the Berrien Springs Community Library at Cass and Union. Notice the change from its usual first Wednesday of the month, due to the holiday on Jan. 1 and the library not being available on the following Wednesday.

The program will be presented by Rob Shellhamer, the treasurer of the club. His topic will be Flash Photography. He says, “I will be covering both built-in and camera flash, but not strobe lights (though many of the same principles would apply).” He adds, “There will be a short bit on theory and technique, but mostly just playing with the camera and flash. Participants should feel free to bring theirs and play along or just sit and enjoy.”

Shellhamer, an avid photographer, has been a member of the Berrien Springs Camera Club for six years. He enjoys a wide variety of kinds of photography and enjoys collecting gear for it.  He not only is a skilled photographer, but also has the ability to explain techniques in a step-by-step manner.
