Bolivia
During the 1993-94 school year, the Andrews University architecture students in collaboration with Adventist Development and Relief Agency started the design of a Drug Rehabilitation Center and Childrens home in Lajas, Bolivia, called CERENID. In late summer of 1995, the first group of students went to Bolivia to begin the construction of the first house for the children. Since then there have been one or more trips per year to Bolivia to continue the construction of the project. The architecture students have been joined by students from other departments at Andrews University, as well as youth groups and volunteers from around the world. Groups from River Plate Adventist University in Argentina have joined the Andrews architecture students at Lajas on two different occasions.
Since the first trip in the summer of 1995, the architecture students have designed and begun construction on a church, administration and health-care building, a general purpose building that contains kitchen, dining area, classrooms, and quarters for volunteer workers, as well as a sanitary sewer system and a master plan for the entire project.
At the present time there are 35 children from the ages of 5 to 12 years old at CERENID where they are overcoming drug related or social problems. There is a great need for this type of facility in Bolivia, and as finances become available the capacity will be increased to accommodate 80 children.
Current Projects
There are two projects that are in progress. The first is a house for volunteer workers to live in. It is a small four bedroom two-storey house that is nearly ready for the roofing tiles to be placed.
The second project is the repair and rennovation of the first duplex that was built. The building is 11 years old and has had a hard life. Repairs will include replacing the roofing tiles, ceiling, and doors, repainting the interior and restuccoing the exterior.
