Call for Proposals
DISCIPLINE AND DISCIPLESHIP:
PAIRING PROFESSIONALISM AND CHRISTIANITY IN ADVENTIST ENGLISH STUDIES
The Adventist English Association calls on secondary and college/university English teachers across the denomination, as well as independent scholars and those working at non SDA institutions, to propose papers, panels, roundtables, and workshops on a variety of subjects related to the discipline of English and/or the ways in which our approach to the discipline is shaped by our faith tradition. The conference theme is meant to support, but not to limit or restrict proposal creation.
We welcome proposals for pre-formed panels, but also encourage proposals from individuals which can then be formed into panels representing voices from a variety of institutions. Collaboration between institutions is always encouraged.
PROPOSALS MUST INCLUDE:
- Name, contact information, institutional affiliation or other employer
- Title, and up to 300 word abstract for the proposed paper, or up to 600 words for panel, roundtable, or workshop
- An indication of technology needs
SESSION TYPES
Each proposal should select a presentation type from among the following:
- Paper: Potential subject areas include (but are not limited to): literature, literary theory, composition/writing pedagogy, creative writing, film, TESOL, teacher education, integration of faith and learning in the classroom, special issues for Adventist English teachers, teaching English at the secondary level, teaching English as an Adventist in a secular context, graduate programs.
- Panel: a grouping of papers from different scholars on a related theme.
- Workshop: a series of presentations or work sessions involving small groups meeting to concentrate on particular areas of concern, with the purpose of informing, training, or solving problems relative to the conference theme.
- Roundtable: an informal discussion on a topic of concern to the conference involving a moderator, diverse panel members, and interaction with the audience.
- Honoring our Forbearers: We plan to have special recognition for two categories of faculty members: those who have retired since our last meetings, in July of 2004, and those who have passed away since then. We request department chairs of each attending institution to supply photographs and brief bios (up to 300 words) of persons from their schools in these categories. Photos can be supplied in 500KB to 2MB size and bios may be sent as Word attachments.
SUCCESSFUL PROPOSALS HAVE THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERISTICS:
- Well-written descriptions that make it clear what information will be shared with participants and how.
- Relevant and new material and ideas for today’s English teachers.
- Quality in concept, research, and content.
- Sessions that include multiple perspectives.
**PROPOSAL DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 28, 2013
