Biography:

Gary Land is professor and chair of the history and political science department on the campus of Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Mi. He joined the faculty in 1970.

Born in San Francisco, Calif., Land received a bachelor's degree in history from Pacific Union College, Angwin, Calif., in 1966. After completing a master's degree in history in 1967 from the University of California, Santa Barbara, he earned his doctorate in history from the same university in 1973. His dissertation was titled: "The British Impact on the American Mind."

Land is a member of the Conference on Faith and History and The History Society. He recently served as president of the Association of Seventh-day Adventist Historians and president of the board of directors for the Berrien County Historical Association.

Professor Land's articles have been appeared in Spectrum, Adventist Heritage, Andrews University Seminary Studies, Fides et Historia, and other publications. His books include: editor, Adventism in America: A History (Eerdmans, 1986); editor, The World of Ellen G. White (Review and Herald, 1987); editor, William Miller and the Advent Crisis, by Everett N. Dick (Andrews University Press, 1994); coauthor, with Calvin W. Edwards, Seeker After Light: A. F. Ballenger, Adventism, and American Christianity (Andrews University Press, 2000); Teaching History: A Seventh-day Adventist Approach (2001); editor, Growing Up with Baseball (University of Nebraska Press, 2004); and Historical Dictionary of the Seventh-day Adventists (Scarecrow Press, 2005).

Land has presented papers at the Conference on Faith and History, Association of Adventist Forums: Geology Tour and Conference, Duquesne History Forum, the Great Lakes History Conference, the Midwest Popular Culture Association, the Popular Culture Association, and a symposium on the history of health insurance at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

He is married to Edith Marie Stone Land. They have a son and a daughter.

Dr. Land is the editor of the book "Growing Up with Baseball" published by the University of Nebraska Press. He has also authored the "Historical Dictionary of Seventh-day Adventists" and written an entry of "Sabbatarians" in the "Encyclopedia of Christianity." He wrote a review of Keith Thomson's book "Before Darwin: Reconciling God and Nature."
