Shandelle Henson Replaces Bob Moore as Mathematics Chair
To allow Dr. Moore more time for teaching and research, Shandelle M. Henson has taken over as chair. The transition has been eased by the fact that Dr. Moore is still around to answer questions about and guide Dr. Henson into her new duties.
Mathematics Department Receives Big Grant
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a $300,000 grant to Andrews University and Walla Walla College to study the mathematics of animal behavior. Shandelle M. Henson, Professor of Mathematics at Andrews, and James L. Hayward, Professor of Biology at Andrews, together with Joseph G. Galusha, Professor of Biology at Walla Walla, and Jim M. Cushing, Professor of Mathematics at the University of Arizona, are the co-principle investigators. The four scientists lead the Seabird Ecology Team, an interdisciplinary group that uses mathematics to describe, explain, and predict animal behavior. Undergraduate and master's students are involved in every phase of the research.
Chantel Blackburn, Class of 2006
"I was planning on majoring in mathematics when I came to Andrews but I didn't expect what awaited me - I've had opportunities to teach, research, and present at a professional conference. I've been surrounded by faculty who genuinely care about me and my professional development. I couldn't imagine going anywhere else."
