Continuing Education
Advancement Program at Andrews University is designed to provide an opportunity for licensed physical therapists to pursue continuing education courses and/or graduate academic credit without leaving full-time employment. Currently the program has an orthopedic emphasis. The average course length is 3 to 4 days; all NAIOMT courses run for 6 days (Sunday through Friday).
Andrews University has been approved by the American Physical therapy Association (APTA) and the North American Institute of Orthopedic and Manual Therapy (NAIOMT) to offer course work to help clinicians meet the requirements necessary for certification as:
Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (Exam offered through the APTA)
Certified Manual Therapist (Exam offered by NAIOMT)
All continuing education courses may also be taken for academic credit. Andrews University offers a transitional DPT as well as a DScPT in orthopedic manual therapy. Click here for more information.

This three day course will focus on the thoracic region, spinal and costal joints. It will include a review of the anatomy and biomechanics of the relevant joints. It will also cover the performance and analysis of the selective tissue tension and biomechanical examinations and the manual physical therapy treatment of the thoracic and costal articulations with mid and end range mobilization, as well as manipulation. Inter-relationships between the thorax, cervical spine and shoulder girdle will also be discussed.
MET: Physiological Basis for Exercise Prescription Level I
Andrews University Postprofessional Physical Therapy Program is hosting a continuing education course on Medical Exercise Therapy.
August 15-18, 2010
The MET approach was cofounded by Odvarr Holten a Norwegian manual therapist in the 60’s and 70’s. An accomplished manual therapist, he noticed that patients often returned many times for treatment of a similar problem. He realized, from his training as an athlete, that the exercise programs that he and other therapists were using were not sufficient enough to adequately heal the area and prevent relapses. Thus, the MET approach was born. The METapproach teaches the PT how to:
- Modify and dose exercises specific for the patient’s individual problem at each stage of the healing process, including the prevention of reoccurrence.
- Apply the principles of work-physiology, histology and biomechanics in a framework to be used during the treatment sessions.
- Make exercise prescription objective! The specific exercises and the dosage of the exercises can be computed and stored on your computer.
