Is distance education for me?

Are you ready to take an online or paper-based correspondence course?

  • Do you have reliable Internet access at home?
  • Can you commit a regular, weekly amount of time to the course?
  • Are you comfortable with email and searching and browsing the Internet?
  • Are you fairly "self-motivated" in your learning?

Format of Griggs Courses

All the courses listed here are Griggs courses except the Andrews Medical Terminology course.

Griggs courses are set up with open-enrollment and self-pacing.

Time Limit for Course Completion
All students are given six months from date of enrollment to finish courses. After 6 months from date of enrollment, further extensions are rarely granted.  (In extenuating circumstances, email Janine Lim at janine@andrews.edu).  To obtain credit for that course, a student must enroll again. If you plan to transfer credits to another institution or have financial aid covering distance courses, it is important to finish within the semester you register in, at the most six months.

Exams
For most courses at least one exam is required each semester. Students should read the information about exams found in the Student Handbook (at the beginning of the instructional guide), the course introduction, or the lesson in the instructional guide that precedes the exam. All exams must be supervised by a school or community official, such as a teacher, librarian, registrar, or pastor, who is not related to the student.

Paper Courses
Some of the Griggs courses are paper-based correspondence courses. Your course is a paper-based course unless specifically listed as ONLINE in the catalog. Submissions are mailed to the office; then mailed to the instructor for grading. The instructor then has 2 business days to grade the course. Then the submission is mailed back to the office, and mailed out to the student. Grades are posted online in Desire2Learn. Please allow for two weeks turn-around time of your submissions.

Online Courses
Andrews distance courses are online; and some of the Griggs courses are online as well. Online courses include materials, assignments, and exams or projects. Grades are posted online as well. Andrews courses are online in Moodle; Griggs courses are online in Desire2Learn.

Talk to Your Advisor

Before taking a distance course please talk to both your academic and financial advisors.

  • Ensure that your academic advisor agrees that you will be successful in the course; and that the course will be accepted for your program.
  • Carefully consider the impact of adding a distance course to your financial plan, and the limitations financial aid places on how long you have to finish the course (a semester, not 12 months).
