School of Education Transitions. 2005-2006
The word “transitions” has been used in many ways on this campus recently.
According to the online encyclopedia, Wikipedia, a transition can mean many things. In music a transition is a change from one unit, section, or element to another. In journalism and other writing, a transition is a word or phrase that connects one concrete detail to another in a paragraph and helps each piece of writing to flow smoothly. Transitions may be smooth and connected or disjointed and contrasting.
Whichever meaning you choose, in whichever context you prefer, a transition is a change. And there are several changes happening from this year to next in the School of Education.
In TLC (Teaching, Learning and Curriculum), Dr. Candice Hollingsead, Chair of the department will be moving to a new position at Bethel College. As well, Dr. Doug Jones will be moving to Nethery Hall to join the English department faculty. Ms. Faith-Ann McGarrell who has stepped in this year to serve in a contract position role will be returning to her doctoral studies to finish her PhD in Curriculum and Instruction. Search committees are already in progress to fill these positions. As Drs. Hollingsead and Jones leave there will be 2 new additions to the TLC department. Dr. Barbara Reid from Columbia Union College will be joining the department as Director of Student Teaching. As well Michelle Bacchiocchi who teaches at Ruth Murdoch Elementary School will be joining the department in a math/science educator role.
In LEAD (Leadership and Educational Administration), the department is looking for one new faculty member because of an unfilled position from last year. Interviews have been progressing nicely.
ECP (Educational and Counseling Psychology) is also looking to fill a position in Statistics and Research which was unfilled from last year. This will fill the Dr. Jerry Thayer position who retired last year after serving at Andrews for 26 years. Dr. Ralph Schrader will be filling the position of School Psychology coordinator. Dr. Schrader is a PhD graduate of Andrews and has been a practicing school psychologist in Indiana and Washington for the past several years. Another pivotal position in the ECP department has been that of departmental assistant. Mr. Jim Chambers will be leaving to pursue doctoral studies for next year. Thanks must go to Jim for his strong work with CACREP accreditation over the past couple of years.
In ODL (the Office of Distance Learning) Neal Boger, who has been the director of that department for the past 7 years, will be leaving for Tennessee where he is going into private business and consulting. No replacement as been named as yet.
In organizational development, a transition is the interval between two states, the current state and the desired state. That’s where we are at in the SED. Our desired state is to be the best we can be and we look forward to God’s leading as we transition into the new academic year with new personnel in several areas. Welcome to hose coming and best wishes to those who will be leaving us. Thanks for your dedicated work for the SED.

Andrews Ranks High

An article in the recent Detroit News expressed the need for improvement in many of Michigan’s teacher preparation programs. The article discussed teacher turnover, certification scores and the need for real-world skills.

What’s the good news? Andrews ranks high on the list of schools and in the percent of students passing the MTTC. Andrews ranked number 10 with an 89.3% passing rate for 2001-2004 in comparison to the 86.5% state average.

Great news for Andrews and for our TLC Department! Thanks to all of you for your hard work with our students!
