Penny earned her B.A. from Spring Arbor College and M.M. from University of Massachusetts-Lowell both in Flute Performance.   While at UMass-Lowell, Penny studied flute with Iva Milch who is 2nd flute/piccolo for the Boston Lyric Opera, Boston Ballet, and now retired from the Boston Pops.  Penny was a school-wide Concerto Competition Winner in 1995.  After graduation, Penny performed with the Nashua Flute Choir directed by Dr. Eileen Yarrison for six years and taught private lessons through the Nashua Community Music School.

Penny has been adjunct flute faculty for Andrews University since 2008, the Citadel Dance and Music Center (CDMC), and Crescendo Academy of Music (CAM) since 2006.  Penny is the founder and director of the Southwest Michigan Flute Quartet as a collaborative effort between CDMC and CAM to provide an excellent ensemble opportunity for advanced adult flute students.  Penny also began teaching MUSI 101 “Music, Creativity, and Culture” on-line for Regent University’s School of Undergraduate Studies via Blackboard in 2008.

In addition to on-line and private teaching, Penny is a member of the St. Joseph Municipal Band and a substitute with the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra.  This past summer Penny was chosen to be one of 15 performers in the Walfrid Kujala Master Class in Orchestral Performance at Northwestern University.  Furthermore, Penny recently won an opening in the West Michigan Flute Association’s Chamber Choir and 53 member Flute Orchestra directed by Darlene Dugan.  Through the WMFA, Penny will compete with other flute choirs at the National Flute Association’s Flute Choir Competition in South Carolina in August, 2011.
