Why do they call him the Gum Guy? We decided to "Connect" with the man himself and here's what we learned. Gum Guy, aka Stephen Payne, is really the Vice President of Enrollment here at Andrews University.

So, what's with the gum?

Gum Guy:

Well, over the years I've come to the realization that with all the study given to what creates career success, the results were incomplete. I had heard about the obvious elements of success. A comprehensive education. Understanding teachers. A curious mind. A passionate soul. The right training. A well-rounded resume. So what was missing? What had all of these studies performed by intelligent, successful minds overlooked? Well, the answer was right under their noses.

Fresh breath.

No small detail when you consider that the sparkling nature of one's breath has led to achievements ranging from a successful date to the rise and fall of entire civilizations.

A stunningly simple conclusion, is it not? Guess that's what makes Andrews University such a savvy, and dare we say it, fresh choice!

Minty fresh breath.

Andrews understands the central role of this factor in success and doesn't leave the nature of our student body's breath to mere chance. Instead, Andrews relies on the able skills and free gum distribution activities of, you guessed it, the Gum Guy pictured here. On campus you'll find him roaming assembly halls and hanging out in the cafeteria, a man with a mission-and lots of gum! And he's not stuck (pardon the pun) here at Andrews. Gum travels well and so does the Gum Guy. You'll find him everywhere from neighborhood restaurants to high schools and colleges, from Michigan to Wisconsin to Kenya and India. Obviously, fresh breath in any language is an essential tool for success!

And if you can't come to the Gum Guy, let the Gum Guy come to you. Through the marvel of modern technology a pack of gum could be winging it's way to you free of charge.
