Griselda Guzman

Yearbook Edition

Each morning as they head out to classes and breakfast, the third-floor residents of Lamson Hall pass me as I wave hello, sing them good Griselda Guzmanmorning songs, or smile. My name is Griselda Guzman, a member of Lamson Hall's maintenance and housekeeping staff. But, my everyday work is not nearly as important as the work God has given me.

In 1985, I was living in the Dominican Republic. I asked God for a missionary job, and He made it very clear what I was to do. He told me to move to Michigan, where I would find work for Him. In 1992, my prayer request turned into a job opportunity in Lamson Hall, at Andrews University, as part of the housekeeping staff. I have been employed here ever since, working full time and carrying out my greater purpose. What I do is not just a cleaning job. The girls in Lamson Hall, more than anything else, need someone to talk to. So, I make it my job, along with scrubbing sinks and bleaching showers, to take the time to talk with them and pray with them. It's interesting getting to know them as people and finding out what happens in their lives. I feel young again when I talk to the girls!

We don't have to go to Africa or South America to be missionaries. You can be a blessing for other people. To me, it is not about how big a deed you can do for someone, but how often you can bless others. All of this goes back to God. We are only here as servants for the Lord. The glory is His, not ours.

"...we must all work together..."

Griselda Guzman

In heaven, we all have to live together. No one will be judged by their educational background, position in life, or amount of money earned. That is why we must all work together to tell others about Him. Although I have two daughters, a son-in-law, and a grand-daughter of my own, I consider the "Lamsonites" part of my extended family. When Jesus comes to take us to heaven, I hope sincerely that the girls in Lamson Hall will be my neighbors!
