- My Master's thesis explored the theological/philosophical roots of the prevalence of
phonics instruction in fundamentalist Christian education. Reasons why Christian educators
had/have a bias toward phonics instruction in reading instruction were discussed.
Vision Statement
- I want to have a well-rounded knowledge of educational foundations and philosophical
viewpoints in public and private education, including home education. I want to better
integrate my personal faith and philosophy.
Proposal
- Take an independent study course on educational philosophy and foundations. I will read
Dr. George Knight's Philosophy of Education and write reflections as I work to formulate a
personal philosophy of education. Since I am employed in public education, I will
articulate how my Christian worldview meshes with my public employment.
Portfolio Documentation
- See transcripts from Ohio State University.
- A copy of my qualitative research project complete for my Master's thesis
will be on file. Also, a copy of the article based on my thesis and published
in the JRCE will be filed here, along with reactions/discussions from the
article.
- My AU transcript, and reflections and writings from my work will be on file.

- At least two of the completed chapters in my book have to do with the specifics of the
linguistic development of young children. The discussions relate to a "language
centered" view of the development of spoken and written language in children.
Vision Statement
- I wish to develop a fluent, working knowledge of foundational theories of learning and
apply them to my teaching of children and adults.
Proposal
- I will take an independent study course in learning theories. The readings and
assignments will parallel those given in the Learning and Motivation (EPDC680) course
taught by Dr. Tucker. I will make connections with philosophical bases and
psychology. I
will also contrast pedagogy with andragogy - the teaching of children vs. adults.
Portfolio Documentation
- See transcripts from Ohio State University.
- A copy of my book, or at least the chapters having to do with learning theory
and human development, will be on file.
- My AU transcript, and a sample of writings and completed course assignments
will be on file.
C. Theories of Leadership and
Management.
Prior Experiences/Education
- Readings and discussions for the orientation session of this Leadership program included
The Religion of Power, Leadership and the New Science, and In the Name of Jesus.
- I was a Jennings Scholar Recipient for our school district in the 1993-94 school year.
As a recipient, I was invited to attend a series of lectures on the Ohio University campus
during the 1994-95 school year. These lectures had to do with issues relating to education
and leadership.
- I want to have a basic understanding of current theories of leadership and how they
balance with the fundamentals of management.
Proposal
- Take the Leadership and Management distance learning course proposed by Dr. Penner.
Readings and assignments yet to be determined.
Portfolio Documentation
- My reflections were included in journal entries during those two weeks.
They will be on file here.
- I kept my notes, all handouts, and journal reflections on these lectures.
- My AU transcript, and a sample of course writings and completed assignments
will be on file.
D. Social values such as family
dynamics, political issues, and bureaucratic structures.
Prior Experiences/Education
- My masters thesis explored traditional, Fundamentalist Christian beliefs and practices
related to schooling and how these have meshed with the actual reading instruction that
takes place in Christian day and home schools. I explored the social dynamics related to
the communication of these ideas in formal and informal settings.
Vision Statement
- I want to continue to develop an understanding of how bureaucratic structures, families,
and social systems affect education and learning in general and home schooling in
particular.
Proposal
- Take an advanced study on the phenomenon of home schooling as a social system.
Portfolio Documentation
- See documentation for 5.B.3. above
- Reflections on readings will be on file.
E. Educational Technology and
its Application.
Prior Experiences/Education
- I have never been timid about using any technological innovations in my instructional
ventures. I've used photographic slides, 16 mm film projectors, video tape, audio tape,
and computers including CD ROM in my teaching. I've trained my students to effectively use
these things as well. I am considered the "resident expert" in computing at our
school district. My superintendent has asked me to consider a part-time position as the
technology coordinator for our district whenever the position is created and funded. I
give consultation regularly (without pay) to teachers, friends, parents, and students on
computer matters. I've learned to successfully navigate on-line services and to
communicate using E-mail.
- I certainly have not learned everything there is to know about the technology of
teaching, but I have learned much on my own and integrated it into my teaching. I'm sure I
will continue to do so in the future.
Vision Statement
- I will continue to learn as much as possible about using technological innovations of
every kind in my teaching.
Proposal
- Because of my intense interest in technology, I believe I have met the most basic
requirements in this area. I will attend the Technology in Education seminar to be taught
by Marilyn Eggers during the Summer '96 quarter to become fluent in advanced technology
applications.
Portfolio Documentation
- Course assignments/completed productions will be on file.
