| Borrowing Policies for Off-Campus Students |
This document is for Andrews University (AU) off-campus students who live
over 100 miles from the AU campus or who are enrolled in field-based or
extension programs. Students who are eligible for this service must have an
Andrews ID and be a James White Library (JWL) user in good standing. Students
who live less than 100 miles should refer to the Borrowing Policies for On-Campus
Students.
These provisions are offered because of the value placed on our students who live
away from the campus. Copies of journal articles for classes taken at Andrews may
be requested from James White Library (JWL) if they are not conveniently available
online or in the local libraries. JWL will lend its own books to those who have U.S.
addresses. Students who are in off-campus programs are encouraged to investigate
all possible resources in their area of residence for their research needs. It is to the
students' benefit that they register with the public library in their area and negotiate
for use and check out privileges at the nearest academic libraries for the sake of
efficiency and speed.
FINDING RESEARCH MATERIALS
Check the Library Catalog for electronic resources, including books,
dissertations, and periodicals.
Download full text articles from the Web or from databases provided by JWL.
Go to the nearest public library or academic library and photocopy pages
needed.
Purchase books, articles, dissertations, and documents from Web sites that sell
them.
Request photocopies of articles from JWL.
Patrons with U.S. addresses may request JWL-owned books.

Students may find it faster and more convenient to

Borrow books through their public library's interlibrary loan service

Register as community card holders in the academic libraries in their area

If books are listed as "Available" on the
Library Catalog, students with
U.S. addresses may submit requests directly to JWL by filling out the JWL
Request Form without going through their public library.

Andrews dissertations
are available online at:
Andrews University Dissertations (Proquest).

Students may
purchase Andrews dissertations as well as non-Andrews
dissertations at their own expense for a reasonable price from UMI/Proquest
on the Web
http://www.proquest.com or by mail or phone.

Theses and dissertations which are
not online but are listed as "Available" in the
JWL Catalog may be
borrowed by students with U.S. addresses who fill out one
JWL Request Form per title. Photocopies of dissertations will not be sent.
Unfortunately, JWL cannot borrow dissertations from other libraries and send them
to students who live far from Andrews. Dissertations not owned by JWL may be
obtained more quickly if requested from the local library where the student is
registered. Pick up and return to that library.
Go to the nearest library that owns the dissertation as listed in the WorldCat and
browse or photocopy pages needed.

Some articles can be
freely accessed from the
World Wide Web.

E-journals and full text articles are
available from the
JWL Periodicals A-Z list.
Journal articles may be photocopied from libraries in the students' area of
residence.
Articles which are not available from any of the options above may be requested
from JWL by filling out one JWL Request Form per article.
For quick delivery, articles may be purchased from Ingenta at the patron's
expense.

ERIC documents are available for viewing and / or copying in
ERIC.
Documents that are not available in ERIC may be
purchased from the
ERIC Document Reproduction Service. Paper, microfiche, fax are shipped the
next day; electronic form is immediately available for download.

Students in the U.S. may
read or copy what they need from the nearest ERIC
Resource Collection as listed in the
Directory of ERIC Resource Collections.

Students in the U.S. may also
request the microfiche version through their public
library's interlibrary loan service because of the need for a microfiche reader.

ERIC documents are available in microfiche form at JWL for students who happen
to be on campus and are willing to read them in-house with a microfiche reader.

INTERLIBRARY LOAN ( ILL ) / DOCUMENT DELIVERY
This policy applies to requests submitted by off-campus students to the James White
Library Interlibrary Loan Office. This does not apply to requests sent directly to the
Adventist Heritage Center, or through the public library or the academic library in the
students' area of residence, or through any other document delivery service.
Interlibrary Loan / Document Delivery (ILL) is a service that helps off-campus
students receive materials that cannot be easily acquired from the Web or from
a resource center within the patrons' area of residence. Its purpose is to support
the students' research needs in connection with classes or other course
requirements for which they are
currently registered at AU. It also directs patrons
to resources that they can access themselves without the mediation of ILL.
Exclusions: ILL will
not process the following items:
- Items which are free on the Web
- Textbooks currently in use
- Reference books, media, entire sets of books or periodicals
- Rare or fragile materials
- Books, theses, and dissertations from other libraries
- Materials for recreation, entertainment, hobbies, genealogy, etc.
- Materials for the needs of friends and family members

Most items requested from JWL arrive
within 2 weeks.

Photocopies of articles are
free.

There are
charges for overdue books ( $1.00/day ), damages, losses, or failure
to follow instructions.
No grace period.

A maximum of
10 requests may be submitted
within the same week.

To avoid overdue fines, patrons should borrow only the number of books they
can read within the loan period.
Periodical article requests are processed electronically from the appropriate
OCLC FirstSearch database. If article is not found in an OCLC database, one
JWL
Request Form per title is required for efficient processing.

Requests for
JWL books sent by students
with U.S. addresses are processed
electronically from the JWL
Request Form. Fill out
one form per title for efficient
processing. We are unable to process requests from students who are not in
the U.S.

Only
complete and accurate citations will be processed.

If request is being processed on an OCLC database, press the CANCEL button
if request has
not been submitted.

If request
was submitted on an OCLC database, do not press the CANCEL button.
Call the ILL Office immediately at
269-471-3506 or send a note to
ILL.

If request was submitted using the
JWL Request Form send an email message
immediately to
ILL.
JWL books (including theses and dissertations) will be received
only by U.S. patrons
by mail.
Photocopies of articles may be received by postal mail or electronic delivery
regardless of location. Electronic files must be opened
within 24 hours because
of the time limit on the server.

The materials are given a six-week loan period which includes the travel from
and to the library.

The
date due is when the book should be
back at JWL. Please allow sufficient
time for shipping.

Books borrowed from JWL must be returned by
UPS or the U.S. Postal Service
and
insured at $100 per book at the
borrower's expense to:
Interlibrary Loan
James White Library
Andrews University
1400 Campus Drive
Berrien Springs, MI 49104-1400

Borrowers should retain proof of shipment for a minimum of 90 days.

Photocopies of articles do not have to be returned. They become the patron's
personal property and must be used in accordance with U.S. copyright laws.

Books are considered lost when not returned
one month after the due date.
Patrons will be charged no less than $100 for replacement cost which includes
current purchase price of the book plus processing fee.

Verify that the items requested are not accessible on the Web.

For faster access, consider obtaining items from a nearby library or resource
center.

Provide accurate citations of items requested.

Keep track of items requested and returned.
Request the number of items that can be read within the time limit
set by the
lending library in order to return them on time.

Give accurate and honest information.

Cancel requests no longer needed.

Respond immediately to communications received about their requests.
Follow up requests
two weeks after order has been placed.

Return borrowed items on time and with proper packaging and insurance.

Pay all fines and charges regardless of patron status or position.

Abide by the policies and procedures.

Cooperate with the Library personnel.
The ILL Office reserves the right to accept or reject requests depending on the circumstances. Patrons who abuse the system, present problems, or refuse to abide by policies
and regulations will forfeit their interlibrary loan privileges. Policies are subject to change
at any time. Patrons are responsible for abiding by U.S. copyright laws. The ILL Office
does not take any responsibility for patrons' violation of copyright laws or for those who
commit plagiarism.
