INTERLIBRARY   LOAN   -   POLICY |
  TYPES
The Library will borrow books and dissertations and acquire photocopies
of articles only if they
are not available in James White

Exceptions: The following requests are excluded: textbooks, pleasure
reading, personal research,
genealogy, items that are rare or
fragile, reference, media, entire sets of books or serials.
  RATE and COST
  PROCESS
Requests must be processed electronically from the correct OCLC FirstSearch
database and
from the actual record seen on the screen. The requestor
should select the interlibrary loan
feature only after checking the
James White Library catalog and all the Library's full-text
resources. In filling out the form, give the following:
Exceptions: When there is no OCLC FirstSearch database that
contains the needed journal
article, the requestor may fill out a blue
card correctly and completely, paste a photocopy of
the citation from
a standard source (bibliography, printed index), and write down the OCLC
number (number in brackets) from the Serials Directory or the ISSN from
Periodical Titles in
OCLC FirstSearch.
When a needed book is not found in WorldCat or a dissertation is not found in
WorldCat or
Dissertation Abstracts, the requestor may fill out the
designated cards with a copy of the
citation attached.
Correctly filled out forms may be submitted to the Information Desk
(or the Circulation Desk
when no one is at the Information Desk).
For questions or assistance, please go to the Information Desk.
  RECEIVING and RETURNING
Photocopies of articles will be sent directly to the requestor's address.
Notices regarding the
arrival of books and dissertations will be sent to
the requestor's address.
Since lending time varies from library to
library, items must be picked up immediately from and
returned on time to the Circulation Desk.
  RENEWALS
Renewals may or may not be granted by the lending libraries because they
have their own
patrons to serve.
It is important to borrow only the number of books that can be read
within a very limited time.
In extreme cases when the date of return has to be extended, renewals
should be done
no later than three days before the due date in
order to give time to communicate with the
lending library.
Steps are as follows: fill out a renewal slip from the Circulation Desk,
keep the book with its
original due date, and wait for information from
the Interlibrary Loan Office.
The book/s must be returned with both the
original date due slip and the
renewal slip with the renewed date to the
Circulation Desk.
Books without the renewal slip will be charged an overdue fine when returned
after the original
date due. No renewals over the phone, please.
  OPTIONS
Patrons who do not have enough time to process an interlibrary loan may
select
one of these options:
2. Purchase the article on their own credit card through Uncover Web.
3. Purchase their own bound copy of the dissertation from Bell and
Howell/University
Microfilms International by filling out an order
form from the Reference Desk.
  DISSERTATION PURCHASES
Copies can be purchased in microfilm, microfiche, hard cover, or soft
cover.
Do a Dissertation Abstracts search and note the author, title, and
accession number (order number)
of the dissertation to be purchased.
Ask for a UMI order form from the information desk or process
your
request directly from the UMI's web site.
You can order a shrink-wrapped, unbound copy of the dissertation for a
cheaper rate.
Once again, it is important that you have all the
information about the dissertation especially the
accession number.
