Closed Study Carrels
Open Study Carrels
A limited number of closed carrels are assigned to doctoral students
for the purpose of
providing a place to keep study materials: particularly library books,
pamphlets, and periodicals
related to major research.
1.It is expected that materials related to research will be kept in
the carrels. Upon inspection
of the carrel by the coordinator, it should be apparent
that the carrel is being used for the
purpose stated above.
2.Because demand for carrels exceeds supply, a waiting list is available.
Preference will be
given to those students nearest completion of their degree
requirements.
a. Carrels will be assigned
to School of Education students only after they have passed
their comprehensive exams.
b. Carrels will be assigned
to Seminary students only after the completion of course
work.
3.Students must be able to show that they are using a closed carrel
an average if twenty or
more hours per week. If they use a carrel less than twenty
hours per week, they will be
asked to move to an open carrel. Carrels must be renewed
each term.
4.Sharing carrels:
a. School of Education carrel
holders may be requested to share their carrels with
another student, provided
workable arrangements can be made. Due to the influx of
temporary doctoral researchers
during the summer term, carrel holders will be
expected to share their
carrels with a summer student during the summer term only.
b. Seminary carrel holders
may not share their carrels with another student.
c, Students who are on the
waiting list and want to share a carrel need to make
arrangements with the carrel
coordinator. Sharing a carrel without proper
arrangements is not permitted.
5.A student who takes a study break for a quarter must permit others
to use the carrel. If the
break is longer than one term, the carrel will be
reassigned. Arrangements for this should
be made with the coordinator.
6.Length of occupancy:
a. School of Education students
willing to share a carrel may have the carrel for up to
three years. Those unwilling
to share may use the carrel for two years.
b. Seminary students will
have the use of the carrel for up to three years. Any
extenions will require a
special application.
7.Students will be expected to vacate their carrels as soon as possibile
after the successful
defense of their dissertations, not to exceed one
month. Students should notify the
coordinator immediately when the carrel is no longer
needed. The carrel holder is
responsible for returning the key to Plant Administration,
which charges a fee for
unreturned keys.
8.Rules:
a. Food and beverages are
not permitted in the carrels.
b. Reference materials must
not be kept in the carrel.
c. Library materials kept
at the carrel must be checked out to the carrel assignee.
Carrels will be inspected
regularly by library staff and any reference books or
materials not checked out
will be returned to the shelves.
9.Disclaimers:
a. James White Library cannot
be responsible for personal items which may be left at
the carrel. Valuable items
should not be left unattended at any time.
b. James White Library cannot
guarantee the availability of a carrel to a qualifying
student, and reserves the
right to terminate a carrel assignment at any time, with a
minimum of seven days notice
to the assignee.
