Grace Bible College Lady Tigers 57            Andrews University Lady Cardinals 52

Lady Cardinals Come Close

By Dowin Coffy

Last week cardinal player Erin Mclean told me, that they just had to work out a few kinks and they would be getting better. True to her words the Lady Cardinals gave Grace Bible College all they can handle before losing 57 to 52. The Lady Cardinals were led by the ever so magnificent Katie Hahn who shot a blazing 50 percent from the field (8 of 16) for 19 points. Also a great rebounder she snatched 5 rebounds 3 of them offensive and dished out 2 assists to go along with 4 steals.

Coming out strong and putting up a good game, was center Chelsea Powell who managed to score 14 points and most importantly 10 rebounds, 8 of them offensive. She had a monster of a game and put the team on her shoulders for the second half.

To tell you the truth the game began with the Tigers surging to a 14 point lead by half time, going into the locker room up 32 to 19. That did not faze the Lady Cardinals though, they went back to the drawing board and won the second half scoring 33 points to the Lady Tigers 25 points. The Cardinals finally won in the turnover margin department, forcing 28 Grace Bible turnovers while committing 25 themselves. Katie Hahn pulled the Cardinals to within two early in the second half and it was a barn burner from then on. If anything the Cardinals should have won the game, they attempted 18 free throws and only hit a woeful 9 of them, in the meantime the Tigers shot 31! I repeat 31 free-throws for the night and connected on 21 of them.

The Lady Cardinals fall to 0-5 on the year and play away against Hope College JV on the 23rd of November before returning home on the 5th of December to play Trinity Christian College.

 Cardinals Rally but Fall Short

By Dowin Coffy

“In practice, we’ve been focusing on the defensive end, but on the offensive end, we’ve been working on our intensity and working together as a team to make points instead of working on our own individual game or stats, we have been working with our teammates to work and to understand our own strengths and weaknesses as a team, so we can make more points and do better” , said Erin Mclean.

Gutsy, hardnose defense has been a trademark of the lady Cardinals so far this year, and once again the Cardinals played their hearts out on defense, but fell short of the victory. After giving up 34 points and only scoring 19 points in the first half, the Lady Cardinals gained some confidence and some traction to score 32 points in the second half. The lady Archers managed to weather the onslaught and score 34 points of their own in the second half.

The Lady Cardinals shot 38% from the field (20 of 53) but committed 18 turnovers that ended up harming them. The Cardinals managed to come up with 10 steals and controlled the glass out-rebounding the much bigger Lady Archers 29 to 28. Katie Hahn led the Cardinals in rebounding with 9, and also put up 11 points off of 4 of 13 shooting from the field and 2 of 3 from the free-throw line.

The Lady Cardinals got 13 points from Emily Leffler who found her stroke against the Lady Archers. Leffler made 6 out of 15 from the field to go along with 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal. Also contributing to make this a group effort were Chelsea Powell who shot 4 of 13 from the field for 11 points, and Sarah Fruth who shot 4 of 7 from the field, and 2 of 4 from the charity stripe for 10 points.

“Overall our lack of depth on the bench has helped each one of us to pick it up more and be more intense when we get out there, we also gain more experience, once we get it together towards the end of the season we will really be rockin then”, said Mclean.

Rochester College 64   Andrews Cardinals 26

Rochester College started the game off with petal to the metal and they did not relent until the very end. One bright spot for the Cardinals was at point guard; a diamond in the rough Katie Hahn poured in 18 points, attempting 14 shots and hitting 6 of them to go along with 6 free-throws. Hahn  also grabbed 5 rebounds, 4 of them offensive and had  a great block of a three pointer.

With Rochester College red hot from the outside, hitting 11 three pointers while attempting 28 of them, the Lady Cardinals could not do much to slow their momentum. Shooting a dismal 22% from the field (9 of 41) the Lady Cardinals also committed 22 turnovers. Most of the turnovers were a direct result of Rochester’s full court trapping defense, which they employed well into the second half before falling back into an aggressive half court set. Chelsea Powell scored 4 points,  Sarah Fruth scored 4 points and Sheeree Montelongo scored a point to round out all the Cardinal scoring for the night.

The next Lady Cardinal game is Saturday November 14, 2009 against the Moody Bible College Lady Archers.
