Andrews University invites the community to join them as they celebrate Black History Month in February. A calendar of events and speaker information is below. Any questions should be directed to the Division of Student Life at 269-471-3215. All events are free and open to the public.

Fifty years ago the Civil Rights Act was signed by President Lyndon Johnson, with Martin Luther King Jr. in attendance. This landmark piece of civil rights legislation in the U.S. outlawed major forms of discrimination against racial, ethnic, national and religious minorities, and women. It ended unequal application of voter registration requirements and racial segregation in schools, at the workplace and by facilities that served the general public. King’s role in the American civil rights movement helped bring about this legislation, and he called the act nothing less than a “second emancipation.” During black history month we pause to celebrate this legacy of freedom, and discuss the yet unfulfilled needs of equality and freedom.

The Bible scripture theme for this month’s events comes from Acts 5:29. “But Peter and the apostles answered, ‘We must obey God rather than men.’”
