Conservative estimates suggest that 90% of our mission work is maintenance missions, support for and cooperation with existing programs and structures. While this type of mission outreach is still very important, it leaves untouched most of the unreached people in this world.
Countries in what is known as the 10/40 window (between the 10th and 40th parallels) are home to almost 90% of the world's unreached people, but have drawn only about 10% of the total Christian mission workforce. North Africa, the Middle East, the Gulf States, Northern India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, China and other neighboring states are generally closed to traditional missionaries and to traditional mission approaches. In these areas, "tentmaker" missionaries are needed.
