There are three steps that you need to do before testing out of INFS110 Computer Tools.
Step 1: Take the Survey
If you are planning to take the waiver exams you must fill out a questionnaire. The questionnaire will give us an idea in regards to your level of computer familiarity. You may download the survey below and either mail or fax it to us.

Step 2: The Computer Literacy Waiver Exam
A paper-based test will be administered either by schedule or by appointment. The exam has 50 multiple choice questions and will cover the following topics:
Computers Systems
- classification of computer systems by size, functionality (including mobile devices)
- data storage methods - text, numeric, graphic
Hardware
- parts of the computer
- primary vs. secondary storage
- storage capacity
- communication and other peripheral devices
Software
- classification: system vs. application software
- types of system software - operating systems for personal computers, utilities
- types of application software
The Internet and WWW
- Connecting to the Internet - ISPs, Internet addresses, Hardware used, Types of connection
- Internet applications - email, ecommerce, social networking
- Browsing and searching - constructing search strings with Boolean operators and wild cards
Networks
- topologies
- transmission media
- Common devices e.g. switch, router, server, security
Rights, Security and Privacy
- access
- fault tolerance
- recovery
- methods of attack
Ethics and Rights
- property rights
- licensing
Step 3: The Microsoft 2007 Application Waiver Exam
Once you have passed the Computer Literacy Waiver Exam, you will be allowed to take the Microsoft Application Waiver Exam. You will be tested on the following software: Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access. You need to pass three of the four applications to waive out of INFS110 Computer Tools.
