Prerequisite Course
There is only one prerequisite course for the DMin program: you must show that you have taken a graduate-level research methods course. It is not part of the 32 credits that will comprise your DMin degree. It is NOT the same as GSEM730 Field Research for Ministry, which IS part of the DMin required curriculum.
Andrews Seminary makes available GSEM620 Research Methods, offered on campus for two or three credits. Special arrangements have been made for DMin participants to take this course by correspondence when registered through the DMin office. Check with the DMin office for details or to register for the course.
Doctor of Ministry participants who lack this course in their Master's-level work will usually need to register for a research methods course concurrently with their first year's DMin registration. The paper you will write as an exercise for this course may be the same paper you must write for your DMin course module (which will also become a chapter of your project). It is intended that the research methods course will help you produce a better paper, and achieve an optimum outcome for your doctoral project.
It is not required that the research methods course be done at Andrews, but you may find it advantageous to take the course through the institution whose library you intend to use for the majority of your literature research. If you find a suitable course at another institution more convenient to your location, you may choose that option. Look for a two- or three-credit course that will result in a 15-20 page paper, written using the APA (American Psychological Association) style guide. You should also make sure the school you choose has accreditation that is compatible with accreditations recognized by Andrews.
If you take a research methods course at any institution other than Andrews, you will need to request a transcript to be sent to the Doctor of Ministry office upon completion of the course. It is not necessary to transfer credits; only to provide a transcript to show you satisfactorily completed the course.
