NAD and World Field Workshop

Organization and Methodology

For the North American Division, the Religious Education program will provide the training in the form of a 12-semester graduate certificate program called Campus Spiritual Leadership. For the rest of the world field of Seventh-day Adventists, the program will be presented as a 6-unit workshop with the same title. (The reason for the workshop format in the world field is to reduce the cost.)

Characteristics of the North American Division Graduate Certificate Program

The Campus Spiritual Leadership graduate certificate program has already been processed through all of the academic procedures and has been approved. In October 2002, we held a curriculum summit of people working in Christian and public campus ministry. The 16 participants reviewed our proposed program and made original contributions to it. We are planning to implement the program on a small scale in the summer of 2004.

  • Two 1-week intensive courses will be offered each summer for two consecutive summers
  • Each course will have pre-campus assignments and a post-campus field application assignment.
  • Pre-campus preparation will be supported by various forms of technology, such as D2L (a computer technology for teaching courses on the web), electronic databases and electronic reserve through the James White Library.
  • The courses will be regular master's level courses that can be used in the MA (Religious Education), the MA in Youth Ministry, or the Master of Divinity programs.
  • Each summer there will be a spiritual retreat for participants in connection with the on-campus session. (If funding can be obtained.)
  • Upon successful completion of the program, students will be awarded an academic graduate certificate from Andrews University. Completion of the program will be noted on their transcript.
Characteristics of the World Field Workshop

Class presentations given on campus in the graduate certificate program would be video taped and presented in locations where the program is requested by educators or ministerial directors.
  • The director of the Campus Spiritual Leadership program or his/her designee would go to each location to show the video tapes, lead discussions, and arrange for local people doing campus ministry to make contextualized presentations on campus ministry.
  • Printed materials and compact disks would be taken to each site for distribution to the students.
  • The sessions could be arranged as three 2-week sessions or two 3-week sessions or one 6-week session. It would depend on the needs of the country.
  • Upon successful completion of the program, participants would receive a continuing education certificate from Andrews University (or the SDA Theological Seminary). They would not receive academic credit for the program. (The non-credit plan is a proposal that seems most feasible at this time. If it were possible to have the academic program delivered to world sites, we would certainly be willing to do so.)
