M.A. (Religious Education)
Roles and Competencies
Core courses in the degree programs develop competencies for six roles that define a religious educator. Within each role, students study and practice to attain competencies in the affective, coginitive, and behavioral domains of learning. Courses and the comprehensive exams are built upon these competencies. The roles, along with their specific competencies, are listed here.
Areas of Emphasis
Areas of emphasis include Christian formation and discipleship,
theological curriculum and instruction, denominational certification for secondary religion teaching, and other options customized by the student in consultation with an advisor.
Basic Course Plan
The MA (Religious Education) consists of 32 semester credits. The curriculum is designed with core courses and a selected area of emphasis. If the student begins the program in the summer, it is possible to complete an MA degree in two summers and an academic year (fall and spring semesters). Because our program is an academic program, a comprehensive exam, which includes a portfolio presentation, is required.
