OTST510 Archaeology and the Bible

Credits: 2 • Teacher: Paul Gregor

Description of Course:

Beginning with a brief introduction to how archaeology is practiced, this course surveys the importance of archaeological discoveries and their role in illuminating our understanding of the Bible. Course content focuses primarily on the historical time periods beginning with the Chalcolithic period (prior to Abraham) and continuing to the Babylonian, Persian, and Hellenistic periods (time of Jeremiah, Esther, and Nehemiah). Another Seminary course (NTST 615) deals with New Testament Archaeology beginning with the Roman period. In OTST 510, emphasis is given to landmark discoveries which shed light on biblical persons and events. Students are encouraged to broaden their understanding of the ancient world and familiarize themselves with reference tools that will sharpen their skills in interpreting the message of the Bible.
