Prevention & Wellness

Wellness involves a set of life skills that promote wellbeing and help to prevent the onset of illness. The Counseling & Testing Center (CTC) promotes wellness and the prevention of illness through outreach activities all over campus. These activities include presentations, training workshops, screenings and awareness-raising events, and the Wellness Fair, among others. These events address relevant student concerns in intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, physical, financial, and occupational areas of life. This reflects the CTC’s holistic approach to health.

National Mental Health Awareness Events

This year, the CTC will participate in the following events along with other university and college campuses throughout the nation:

National Depression Screening Day (October 11, 2012)

Students will have an opportunity to take a brief, anonymous screening and meet one-on-one with a counselor. The screening provides students with insight into symptoms they might be experiencing and offers helpful treatment and referral information, if necessary. Join us to raise awareness about depression throughout campus! Come to the Campus Center and share your message of hope through t-shirt and sidewalk art.

National Eating Disorders Screening Program (February 24, 2013 – March 02, 2013)

Many college students struggle with the way they look or how they feel about their bodies, with one out of three normal dieters progressing to pathological dieting. By recognizing the symptoms of eating disorders, and getting help, students can end their preoccupation with food and focus their efforts on developing healthy eating and exercise habits. This event is designed to educate and screen college students for eating disorders, and to connect at-risk students with the resources they need.

National Alcohol Screening Day (April 5, 2013)

This event raises awareness, educates students about unhealthy drinking habits, offers them confidential alcohol screenings, and connects at-risk students with the resources they need.

In addition, you'll find resources for faculty & staff and parents of college students and a list of self-help books that cover topics related to wellness, mental health, relationships, and human development.

This support network facilitates appropriate referrals as deemed necessary.

Peer Crisis Support Team

The Peer Crisis Support Team exists to utilize the graduate counseling psychology students’ clinical skills through crisis management, crisis prevention, and crisis response training on campus.

Peer-Educator Program

This is an outreach program designed for enthusiastic students interested in promoting wellness and raising awareness about mental health on campus. Peer Educators will reach the student body through the development and execution of outreach programs, like the National Depression Screening Day, the National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, and The DORA College Program (Depression and Suicide Prevention). They will participate in wellness screenings, presentations, and peer-education groups.

  • This is an opportunity to develop leadership skills, team work, and project management.
  • A chance to have a real impact in your community - to raise awareness - on issues that matter to you.
  • A way to enhance your knowledge about mental health and preventative interventions in a college campus.
  • A nice addition to your resume or vitae.
