Faculty Research Grants

The University, through the Office of Research and Creative Scholarship, awards grants on a yearly basis to university faculty for the purpose of advancing knowledge within their academic areas. Individuals from all disciplines are encouraged to apply during an application cycle which happens once each fiscal year.

Annual support of up to $5,000 for the research/creative scholarly activities of faculty is available upon successful competitive application. This support can cover expenses associated with the faculty person’s scholarly growth activities (preferably peer reviewable). In addition, up to $1,500 can be requested in graduate matching funds.

In order to enhance the quality of research proposals and especially to provide development and growth for faculty in conceptualizing-planning effective programs in scholarly productivity/research, the Office of Research and Creative Scholarship, through the anonymous, peer review process, provides an early date for proposal submission. The peer review team will evaluate a proposal, make recommendations for its improvement (or if it is in good shape, retain it for the competitive funding review) and return it to the faculty proposer/s for resubmission by the final due date. This opportunity also raises the bar on the expected quality of proposals necessary to achieve funding. Faculty who elect not to take advantage of pre-review may be at some competitive disadvantage. Upon completion of the review process, notification is sent out to all applicants.

For 2013:

  1. The maximum annual budget has been increased from $4500 to $5000 per faculty member.
  2. Small equipment and dedicated research computers may be allowed in the FRG budget, up to a maximum of $2500.
  3. The FRG can cover 100% of the contract labor cost to provide faculty release time for dedicated research, up to $2400.
  4. Expedited renewal of a current FRG may be requested for a maximum amount of a new  funding of $3,000 plus any remaining funding from the current grant, up to a total of $5000. This additional funding may be requested for a maximum of two years, after which a full grant application would need to be submitted for further funding. The option of carrying over current funds for one year remains.

In order to stimulate mutual growth in quality and productivity, the Office of Research & Creative Scholarship encourages the development of research teams involving disciplinary and cross-disciplinary collaboration among Andrews University faculty or with colleagues of other academic institutions. For example, a research team involving three Andrews University faculty could receive a maximum of $15000 (3 times $5000) in faculty research grant support, rather than the stated maximum for solo research.
