Below you will find all the jobs I've held along with a summary of what I did there as well as the environment in which I did this. I try not to duplicate the information you find on the Resume but some redundancy is inevitable.

Also you will find more jobs listed here than found on my Resume

Radiant Systems

This was a short term contract job. The department that hired me had recently gained a contract from a client in Spain and needed programmers to add the asked for functionality. Originally the requirements were extensive enough that several programmers were hired, however, after we were hired the client reduced the requirements significantly. So much so that it only needed a single programmer. The other programmers were let go and I was put on this. I completed the project in 2 months satisfactorily and my contract was ended. I was told that there simply was not enough work to keep me on.

Paysys International

Although this job lasted only 3 months it was a full time position. They ran into financial trouble and were bought out by a company named Delos and 31 people were laid off on the same day. There were a few that left before this, sensing the troubles and there have been lay-offs since then but since I was new I certainly wasn't going to be allowed to stay. Was a shame because it was a really great place to work.

Accenture

Accenture and Bellsouth formed a partnership they called the Symphony Alliance. I was hired under this. I was an employee of Accenture and a contractor at Bellsouth. I worked at the BellSouth Center for the 2 years I was there. I learned quite a bit there and I left reluctantly when I saw that there was a lack of advancement opportunities for me there. I wanted to stay involved with technology and programming and they wanted me to be more administrative.

Just before I left I was put on a project where I acted as a liaison for the support team and the development team. It was my job to document processes and to help ensure that when the development team turned the project over to the support team that most of the requirements had already been met.

Scientific Games Inc.

This was the first job I acquired when I moved to Atlanta. Although I had many years of experience I took this entry level position with the hopes that I could grow once there. After a year and a half as an N-file auditor I'd proven my programming expertise by not only doing my job faster than any other on my team but also writing several utilities which increased their productivity.

Just as I'd begun to despair of ever advancing I was asked to join the research and development team. This team wrote all the software for the company. I accepted and for the next 6 months I had a wonderful time. Then my boss was fired and the department was dismantled. I was told that I could go back to the department I'd left and they were creating their own research and development department. I accepted but soon after I was offered a position with Accenture which I accepted.

PC Consultants

This was really the first non-academic job I had. It was a small company which did software development for the area. I joined them while I was still in college and stayed with them for a couple of years after I graduated.

I learned a lot while working here. I was allowed to be involved in the full life cycle of the projects I was given. While I was given free use of the company's facilities I primarily worked from home. I used their facilities only to have meetings with the clients.

Benton Harbor Work Force

This job was a bit out of the ordinary for me. It was a new program designed to help individuals gain the skills that employers were looking for. We had a special deal with them and if a person went through our program and finished they were guaranteed a job. The program focused on Math and Reading skills but we had other areas. Although my official title was Assistant Instructor this was only to differentiate between those with teaching degrees and those without.

My main function was to basically be there for the students when they needed help using this program. There were a total of about 30 computers all on a Novell Network which I somehow ended up maintaining a bit for them. In practice I was computer support for the entire building. The building we were using was shared by quite a few businesses as well as city officials. It was in helping them that I was granted a contract by the city for some work. I even got to speak to the Mayor on several occasions. If I had been thinking I would have asked for a letter of recommendation from them.

Van Buren / Cass Public Health Department

I was a supervisor and head of support. My job as was described to me was to keep all the computer systems and such running and to provide ways to improve the existing system. I implemented a few changes and started others. All of which were kept and continued long after I was gone.

The first crisis came very soon after I was hired. There were a total of 8 sites covering 3 counties. All of which were connected using a leased line. A storm knocked out our connection with a couple of sites. I had been told by my boss that I wasn't expected to know everything but only to know how to get things done. Well this I did. I checked around and called up first the phone company to have the lines checked for damage and connectivity. I then called the owners of the network boxes we were using and had them talk me through some tests to determine whether the boxes were damaged.

I was able to get everything going. We had to replace one of the boxes and the phone company needed to repair some things. Shortly after I asked why we didn't have any surge protectors on this expensive equipment. Blank looks were my answer and shortly afterwards I recommended surge protectors...

ComputerLand

Here I again played the teacher role. I taught computer classes. A very learning experience here. One nice benefit was that as an instructor here I was allowed to take any class they offered for free and I certainly made use of this and learned many software packages that I would not ordinarily have been exposed to.

Galien High Schools

While working at ComputerLand I was reacquainted with a young lady I'd helped tutor in college. She was a teacher at Galien High Schools and also taught part time at ComputerLand. She recognized my name on an employee sheet and contacted me about a possible position as her assistant. I accepted.

There were two schools, a high school and a middle school. The computer class which was where I was primarily stationed was on a Novell Network. Although I officially worked for the High School I was often asked for by the teachers of the middle school. They tended to use Macs over there and I was able to figure some things out but not usually. I basically did everything concerning computers. Here are a few things I did while there:

  • Performed some network administrative duties such as adding users, assigning security rights, making sure various programs were protected from students a bit too smart for their own good.
  • Installed and Configured Programs for use on the Network
  • Discovered and got rid of some nasty viruses and installed virus protection
  • Performed trouble-shooting and minor repairs on computers as necessary.
  • Performed Upgrades to computers as needed and desired.
  • Educated the teachers on ways to prevent their students from doing some of the things I had found them doing.
