Conducting the evaluation research for Intel-ebration Expeditions (1996 – present)

Investigated reported use of specific teaching materials and strategies by seventh- and eighth-grade science teachers in the United States. These results were then correlated with a measure of teacher efficacy. (1995)

Served on the research team for Profile '93, a biannual survey of Seventh-day Adventist teachers' curriculum concerns. Involved in instrument development, mail-out, analysis of results, and publication of findings. (1992-94)

Served on a five-member program evaluation team for Andrews University's Summer Teacher's Institute, Quality Education NOW! (1993)

Analyzed and compared objectives presented in elementary mathematics textbooks and those tested on standardized tests. (1990)

 

Qualitative:

Student perceptions of the value of specific elements of the elementary course for how to teach mathematics. 1996-2002. Analysis in process.

An investigation of college students’ perceptions of the integration of faith and learning. Conducted with Dr. Constance C. Nwosu. (One analysis and paper completed. Additional analyses in progress)

A qualitative analysis of Jesus’ teaching methodologies. Conducted with Dr. Constance C. Nwosu. (In progress)

An investigation on the math methods course I teach which resulted in a paper, Focusing on Equity in an Elementary Mathematics Methods Course, which was presented at the Joint Conference on Teaching Science and Mathematics, Little Rock, Arkansas, November 8, 1996.


Research Funding

Funded proposals:

Mathematics and Science Partnership Competitive Grant. (2004). A Partnership between the Berrien County Intermediate School District, Benton Harbor Area Schools, and Andrews University. Burton was a contributing author to the grant proposal development and listed as one of the key personnel for the grant activities. $355,433

 

Funded 2003/04, Andrews University Faculty Research Grant of $8000. Granted to a collaborative team working on the Intel-ebration Expedition Program: Larry Burton, Sharon Prest, and Marc Ullom.

 

Goals 2000 Competitive Grant (through Michigan Department of Education). (2000). Proposal developed for funding the start of the graduate-level Math Endorsement Program. Partners were Benton Harbor Area Schools, Andrews University, and the Berrien County Intermediate School District. Grant budget was $371,000, with Andrews University receiving approximately $150,000.
