Introduction
On-line learning poses new challenges to educators. Teachers must not only be subject-matter experts and inspirational guides for learners, but must also integrate new technologies and multimedia materials into their teaching.

Today we will try to understand and meet these challenges. Over the next few months, you will learn how to incorporate multimedia materials and electronic communication into your courses, how to teach using the Internet, and how to create effective Web sites for your courses.

In short, you can use this information both for enhancing your in-class teaching, and to support distance learning courses. Let's begin with working through these various sites and experience all that we can about "web-enhanced" learning::

Exemplary Sites:
Each of the courses below makes use of exceptional imagery, audio-video clips, links to other sites, or a unique course structure to bring content to students in a motivational way.  By comparing sites, one can get a feel for what works and what may work for your course. A neat site: Bring the ease of the web to your classroom today

Practice:
Let's go to this site to practice putting together a simple course syllabus. I've debated a lot whether to teach you some of the elements of HTML or whether just to deal with WebCT, but I think you need to know something about the basis of everything related to the Internet and the Web. HTML (HyperText MarkUp Language) is not that scary, so let's take a look.

Practice Guide: Create a Web Site Using Microsoft Word. Go here http://depts.washington.edu/catalyst/learning/practice_guides/word_2_web.html

Create a Web Site Using Netscape Composer
A number of Web editors make creating Web pages easy and intuitive. This short session on the use of Netscape Composer as a Web editor and offers specific instructions on the following tasks: Go Here: http://depts.washington.edu/catalyst/learning/practice_guides/nc_2_web.html

Now let's follow these steps for another learning experience.
  1. We should be in Netscape Communicator. Minimize this application.
  2. Open up your course syllabi (it could be in Word or WordPerfect) from your floppy diskette.
  3. Using Word, Save your syllabus as HTML in the 3.5" floppy drive.
  4. Minimize Word and bring up Netscape Communicator. Click on Communicator (on the top horizontal toolbar) and go down to Composer and then click on it. You will now be in a basic Web editor.
  5. Click on New (top left hand toolbar)
