Online Course Design

At the most basic level, an online course should contain the following elements:

  • a student-centered design
  • self-directed instruction
  • learning activities that use constructivism, discovery learning, and active learning
  • the teacher/facilitator role

Perhaps by now you are asking, should I even consider teaching an online course? The North Carolina State Univesity Computing Services has an excellent set of questions to consider when thinking about taking a course online. They are found here http://www.ncsu.edu/it/edu/online/components/getting_involved.html

  • What tasks are involved?
  • What skills do I need to acquire?
  • What types of administrative support can I expect?
  • What kind of time am I talking about?
  • Can all of my course content be online?
  • What about the impact of online teaching on my "teaching style" and my desire to learn new skills?
  • Who are my students and who could be my students?

These questions need to be considered carefully.
