Beautiful hotel on Elephantine Island, located in the Nile River at Aswan |
Ruins of the temple on Elephantine Island, in 400 BC this was the site of a Jewish temple, built by exiles from Palestine after the conquest by Babylon. This temple exhibited a mixture of pagan worship with Yahweh worship. |

The southernmost city of Egypt, Aswan is a beautiful city,
perhaps the most beautiful in Egypt. There is abundant
use of attractive pastel colors in its buildings, flanked by abundant green spaces. A little south of the city is the great Aswan High Dam, creating the largest man-made lake in the world, with more than enough water, by itself, to meet all of Egypt's current development needs. Behind the dam, relocated on a higher island, is the magnificent island temple of Philae, built 2200 years ago and in nearly mint condition. Near downtown Aswan, in the Nile River, is the snake-shaped island of Elephantine, with its magnificent greenery and ruins of what once was a Jewish temple. Although the climate is delightfully dry, it was more than 110 degrees F every day we were in the area. |
