For a Jew or a Christian, no visit to Egypt would be complete
without a journey into the desert of Sinai to the mountain where Moses
received the Ten Commandments from the hands of God Himself. While
there is some uncertainty as to the exact location of the biblical Mount
Sinai, the most likely candidates lie in central Sinai, in the range of
mountains that includes Jebel Musa and Ras-Safsaf. Kimberly and Jon
got up at 1:30 in the morning to begin the climb at 2 AM. "Harrassed"
by dozens of camel drivers, who assumed they would never make it, they
took three grueling hours to climb to the top, where several hundreds people
awaited the sunrise. After returning to the base, Jon was delighted
to visit the manuscript library at the monastery and make friends
with a New Testament scholar there. |
