INCREASE VERB DENSITY
from an assignment written by
an eleventh-grade student
The general categories of solid courses are science, mathematics, languages, and history. By definition of the word academic, there is homework in such courses. To a small extent, there is some form of homework in courses of a nonacademic nature, also.
Homework can serve a beneficial function. Its purpose is to furnish the students with practice exercises on various skills and methods. The purpose of science and mathematics courses can be either for practical usage or as an exercise of the mind, or both. In many cases, they will have considerable use in our daily lives, but others are valuable mainly for their development of clear and logical thought processes. For this type of study, homework is a drill for both the subject matter itself and practice at methods of problem solution. The humanities courses provide us with information more directly essential. Here the homework is mainly memory drills and exercises in self-expression.
Students must have a use for what they learn, and this is why homework is a vital part of the school curriculum.
