CONVEY VISUAL EXPERIENCE
from Sea of Cortez by
Bud Boyd
The boats speed switly out toward the distant, purple islands. the boat's wake is a swath of cream upon the incredibly blue sea, and signs of ifsh are everywhere at this special time of year.
Tiny flying fish burst from beneath the forefoot of the cruiser and they fly for a hundred yards, just barely tippling the water as they skim it. Off to the side the water dances where a school of bait is just beneath the surface--almost like a wind pattern--then as huge fish find the bait and slash it, the little fish all dance upon the surface in an instant. The sea turns silver with their flashing.
...
In the far distance, one can look and see the graceful manta rays. They are the size of table tops. They leap from the water, turn over in mid-flight, showing their pure white underbodies. They they crash into the sea, sending a guyser of foam towards the sky. But even more exciting is the sight of gleaming marlin or sailfish, which jump crazily beyond you. They flash all blue and silver in the sun, and at times they'll leap for no apparent reason. They leap higher than the boat you stand in. They jump 10, 20, maybe 30 times without a pause. They give a sample of what happens when you hook one.
But there are other things to see. The long-tail frigate birds wheel overheat. Huge schools of porpoises play around the speeding boat. They overtake it, play games around the keel, and leap gracefully beside the gunwales, and you can hear the whoosh-whoosh sound of their breathing.
And always, somewhere in vision's range, will be a school of feeding dolphin. These are the ballerinas of the sea. They jump and pirouette. They hang suspended in midair, like flashing saber blades. They'll slide up behind the speeding boat and you can see them flashing just below the surface.
