Types of computers

First you must learn the main types of computers, and they are:

  • Desktops
  • Laptops/Notebooks
  • Servers/Mainframes

Desktops are typically placed in environments where they are not going to be moved very often if at all. They are consumer based computers meaning that the average person will use them and usually are easy to upgrade. They take quite a large deskspace (or footprint) in most cases and require multiple external devices for them to be usable. There are two main types of desktops:

  • Towers
  • All-in-Ones

Towers require an external monitor to be attached for the user to see what they are doing. They also require a mouse and keyboard to be connected for normal use. All-in-Ones on the other hand have a built in monitor and take up a smaller footprint then desktops. They still require a mouse and keyboard to be usable. *Some All-in-Ones, typically Sony's, have a built in keyboard.*
