One of the first things of a computer you see is the monitor. It is what shows the visual representation of what you are doing on the computer. There are two main types of monitors: CRT monitors and LCD monitors.
CRT (cathode ray tube) monitors take up a large footprint on desks, and are very heavy (due to the amount of lead used in them). They are bad on the eyes; after extended amounts of time staring at them the eyes generally get very tired and can cause pain, headaches, and possible vision reduction (especially if the monitor is in a poorly lit room). If you have to use them its best if you are in a well lit room. CRT's are also prone to having the image burned onto the screen permanently if a screen saver is not used or if the monitor is not turned off for long periods of time of no activity.
LCD (liquid crystal display) monitors on the other hand have a significantly reduced footprint, and are easily 2-4 times lighter then a CRT monitor with the same screen area. They are not as harmful on the eyes or the environment. LCD's are not prone to screen burn like CRT's are. LCD screens are used on all laptops.
The screen size of all monitors is measured diagnally, see this diagram.
