PROGRAMS

Courses in the major should be selected in relationship to one of the following emphases:

French Language, Culture and Literature. Designed for students who want to know more about French culture and who are interested in professions such as Business, medicine, law, teaching, journalism, and travel, as well as those wishing to pursue graduate study in French. Program complements such majors: Communication, English, History, German, Mathematics, Music, and Spanish. Requisites: FREN 315, 410; 8 credits of French culture; 8 credits of French literature. ACA courses taken at Institut Adventiste du Saleve, Collonges, France, must be at the 300 and 400 level to count towards a major or minor in French.

German Language, Culture and Literature. Designed for students who want to know more about German language, culture and literature and who are interested in professions such as medicine, law, journalism, and teaching, as well as those wishing to pursue graduate work in German. Program also complements such majors as Music, Communication, English, History, French, Mathematics, Engineering, and Spanish. Requires: GRMN 315, 484; 8 credits of German culture; and 8 credits of German literature. ACA courses taken at Seminar Schloss Bogenhofen, Austria, must be at the 300 and 400 level to count towards major or minor in German.

Spanish Language, Culture and Literature. Designed for students who want to know more about Hispanic civilization and who are interested in professions such as medicine, law, teaching and journalism, as well as those wishing to pursue graduate study in Spanish. Program also complements such majors as Communication, English, French, History, Music, Nursing, and Social Work. Requires: SPAN 315, 484; 8 credits of Spanish culture; and 8 credits of Spanish and SpanishAmerican Literature. ACA courses taken at Colegio Adventista de Sagunto, Spain, or Universidad Adventista del Plata, Argentina, must be at the 300 and 400 level to count towards major or minor in Spanish.

Students whose emphasis is French, German, or Spanish are strongly urged to live and study for a period of time in a country where that language is spoken. Adventist Colleges Abroad (ACA) offers a recommended academic program overseas (see below).

Concentration in Language for International Trade (Bachelor of Arts) 98 credits.

Designed to integrate the study of modern languages and cultures with preparation in international trade and business, the major objective of this concentration is to prepare students for international careers with the necessary business and language skills. Students in French, German, and Spanish participate in an internship in a business/industrial work environment either in the U.S. or abroad where French, German, or Spanish is spoken. Students may take examinations leading to certification in Business French, German and Spanish. The concentration consists of the following three areas:

Modern Languages: French (45 credits): Includes: MDLG120, FREN142, 143, 241, 242, 315, 410, 430, 468, 478; MDLG490 OR 495; plus 6 elective credits from Culture, Language, or Literature.

German or Spanish (45 credits): Includes: MDLG 120; FREN/GRMN/SPAN 142, 143, 241, 242, 315, 468, 478; plus one language course above 400 level; one culture course above 400 level; MDLG 490 or 495 plus 6 elective credits from culture, language or literature.

Students whose concentration is Language for International Trade are strongly encouraged to live and study for a period in a country where that language is spoken. Adventist Colleges Abroad (ACA) offers a recommended academic program overseas.

Business and Economics (45 credits): Includes: ACCT111, 112, 113; BSAD265, 355, 450; ECON225, 226, 454; FNCE387; MKTH310, 465.

No more than 45 credits from the School of Business can apply to degree.

Required cognates (8 credits),(also meet the General Education requirements): INSY 118, MATH 181 or MATH 162.

Certificat Pratique de la Chambre de Commerce et d'Industrie de Paris: This French certification is highly respected in the United States, France, and Europe. Students who succeed in obtaining the Certificat Pratique have solid proof that they have a knowledge of French that allows them to handle basic business tasks in French setting. The required course for preparation are: FREN142, 143, 241, 242, 315, 410, 468, and 478.

Zertifikat Wirtschaftsdeutsch (from the Goethe Institut): This German certification is highly recognized internationally. The required course for preparation are: GRMN142, 143, 241, 241, 315, 468, 478, 484

Minor in Modern Languages is offered in French, German, and/or Spanish. Students must take 30 credits, 16 credits from the 300 or 400 level courses, including FREN, GRMN and/or SPAN 315.

The Minor gives students the opportunity to improve their knowledge of French, German, and/or Spanish language, culture, literature, and business. A Minor in Modern Languages may complement any Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree. This Minor should help students in their graduate work or in securing positions that require the use of the French, German, and/or Spanish language, in areas such as business, journalism, civil service, law and teaching, etc.
