PrArIe GrAsS
Prairie grew as tall as
the average man. At the end of each summer, the
heavy grass cover would wither away, giving nutrients
to the soil. The deep roots of the grasses played an
important role in the building of soils. They formed
a fibrous mass of vegetable material that added mass,
not only at the surface of the ground, but well down
into the soil as well. Now, the tall prairie grass
in North America has disappeared since the land is
level, has good soil, and is favored with good
climate. Lot of the land has been taken over for
agricultural use which means that little is left for
wild plants and animals to use. This is mentioned in the song to describe
the scenery and paint a picture for the reader to show what it was like
to be experiencing from the soldier's shoes. (Encyclopedia
Americana, Deluxe Library Edition, 1994)
