Cuban-born Manuel Valera started as a classical saxophone student at Havana's Manuel Saumell Conservatory. He didn't switch to his current instrument, piano, until late 1994, and he didn't begin composing until 2000, when he enrolled in the acclaimed New School jazz program. What he achieved in his short time is astounding. He debuted in 2003 with Forma Nueva and went on to the release historia and Melancolia, records that featured such top-tier players as Antonio Sanchez, Seamus Blake, John Patitucci and Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez.
In 2007 Manuel released his fourth title, Vientos. Boasting the formidable talents of Joel Frahm, James Genus and Ernesto Simpson. Vientos also found Manuel expanding his sonic palette with a beautifully orchestrated woodwind quintet, featuring the heralded clarinetist and friend of Gallery Anat Cohen, Returning triumphantly to the Jazz Gallery Stage, Manuel turns his attention this time to strings, premiering a new work called "The Impressions of Expressions Suite."
