            Certification / Licensing for School Librarians:
Definition: Recognition that one has met the competency requirements (coursework, tests, etc.) needed to work in a particular field.

Requirements vary from state to state:

  • Library Media Specialist / Teacher-Librarian Certification (not necessarily a master's degree). Check Board of Education for specific requirements.

  • Master's degree from an ALA-accredited institution.

  • Master's degree with a specialty in school library media from an institution accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
