Anti-aliased (smoothed) text:

When anti-aliased transparent GIF text is placed on a dark background, the GIF text appears to have a whitish colored outline. This is because GIF files only provide 1 bit transparency, and therefore the 1/2 transparent outlined picture will appear as white in anti-alias GIF files, which results in a horrid ugly white outline.
