This site is full of resources to help you, the budding young poet, learn how to write a rhyming poem.

Have Fun!

1. To get started visit http://www.poetry4kids.com and choose "How to", then click on "Chapter 2 How to rhyme" and read the section on "Finding rhymes" through the section entitled "What words should I rhyme?" to learn what a rhyme is.

2. Now its time to practice using rhyming words!  Go to http://www.poetryteachers.com  and choose "poetry fun". You will see an option to choose two fill in the blank poems.  Choose the easy version of one of these poems and follow the instructions.  Good Luck!

3. Poems can be used to express a variety of feelings.  Read the poem at http://www.geocities.com/Paris/LeftBank/6711/CottonCandyClouds.htm , then go to http://www.night.net/tucker/ and scroll down to the poem entitled "Ode to a Twinkie" and read it.
What types of poems are these? What kinds of feelings do they express?  What other types of feelings can you think of that might be expressed through poetry?

4. Now it is time to choose a topic and write your own rhyming poem!  If you need some help coming up with an idea go to http://www.poetry4kids.com and choose "How to", then choose "Chapter 3 Choosing a topic", and read the information on how to choose a topic.

5.  Try to think of rhyming words on your own.  If you get completely stumped, or are trying to rhyme with a really unusual word then go to http://www.rhymezone.com You can type in your word and get a list of words that rhyme with it.  Remember, try to come up with words that rhyme on your own, if possible.

6. When you have written your poem, you can type it on the computer and illustrate it.  Save it following your teacher's instructions so it can be printed for a class book or published to our class poetry page.
