OFFICE OF SCHOLARLY RESEARCH - Research Services Specialist

Position summary

Assist the Associate Dean for Research in the operations of the Office of Research and Creative Scholarship.  Duties include planning and organizing research conferences and symposia, assisting faculty members in writing and submitting external grant applications, processing Faculty Research Grant and Faculty Activity Award funding, maintaining web pages and other activities that promote research at Andrews.

Qualifications summary

Master’s degree, two years experience in research, training in grant writing and graphic design. 


Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Duties and responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Externally Funded Grants 50%

a. Participate in grant writing workshops, inform eligible faculty regarding grant writing workshops that would be of interest to them as well as leading on-campus training sessions for interested faculty.

b. Explore grant options, keeping an up-to-date database of relevant grants on the website, and contact eligible faculty with grant application information.

c. Develop training materials for the grant application process, and provide education and training for faculty on grant application procedures.

d. Assist faculty members through the complete grant writing process, from exploring relevant grant opportunities, to writing and submitting the grant, and follow up on all applications.

e. Monitor and approve charges to and transfers from external research grant budgets.

 

2. Research Advancement 20%

a. Coordinate and organize annual research celebrations, conferences, and other events highlighting faculty and student research.

b. Assist other departments on campus (when requested) in organizing research conferences.

c. Schedule Faculty/Student Research Seminars and Luncheons.

d. Maintain and update the Research web pages

e. Write and produce publicity brochures and other development materials highlighting research productivity at Andrews University.

f. Promote undergraduate research.

 

3. Annual Faculty Activity Reports (FAR) 10%

a. Process the Faculty Activity Report section of the January Reports.

b. Record FAR Award recognition for each reporting faculty member according to Scholarly Research Council guidelines.

c. Process and track individual faculty activity award spending, and prepare periodic reports to faculty with FAR Award balances.

d. Prepare reports of faculty scholarship activities for distribution to the departments, schools, and the Scholarly Research Council.

 

4. Internal Faculty Research Grants (FRG) 10%

a. Process internal Faculty Research Grant applications and prepare materials for the Faculty Research Review Committee.

b. Process faculty charges against their FRG budgets prior to such claims being honored by Accounts Payable or Payroll.

c.Track individual faculty budget spending, and provide periodic reports to FRG faculty.

d. Prepare reports for distribution to the Scholarly Research Council.

 

5. Undergraduate Research Scholarships (URS) 5%

a. Process Undergraduate Research Scholar applications.

b. Collect progress reports from faculty.

c. Facilitate the crediting of student accounts in a timely fashion.

d. Facilitate opportunities for presentation of URS research, in both on-campus and off-campus venues.

e. Maintain records of accomplishments of Undergraduate Research Scholars, including public presentations and publications, and post relevant highlights to the webpage.

 

6. Scholarly Research Council (SRC) 5%

a. Serve as Recording Secretary of the SRC.

b. In collaboration with the Associate Dean for Research, compile agendas and maintain minutes.

c. Prepare documents for each meeting.

Supervisory responsibilities

Organize and supervise volunteers for conferences and symposia.     

Qualifications

Master’s degree or higher recommended. 

A minimum of two years of experience in research expected, as either a student or staff member.

Background or training in grant writing strongly recommended.

Graphic design experience strongly recommended.


Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Technical competencies

Microsoft Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint, CMS, InDesign, Photoshop, Digital Commons, familiarity with desktop publishing, web design, course management system such as Moodle, accounting and finance.   

Interpersonal interactions

Strong interpersonal and communication skills necessary to interact with faculty, students and external contacts.

Excellent customer service skills.

Ability to work independently and attention to detail.

Strong analytical skills and self-motivated.

Physical demands

The employee will need to be able to set up and take down conference materials, including carrying boxes of easels and poster boards. The employee will need to report early on days when conferences or symposia take place and may be required to stay after normal office hours.

Work environment

The employee is expected to perform as part of the Office of Research & Creative Scholarship team, working with the Associate Dean for Research and the Research Integrity and Compliance Officer, to create an atmosphere of excellence in scholarship on campus. The work space is physically located in the administrative wing of the third floor of the administration building. It is important that the employee is prompt and professional both in attitude and appearance.
