Position summary
The Department of Biology at Andrews University is looking for a highly qualified biologist to fill a tenure-track position, beginning fall 2016. The successful candidate will demonstrate a record of effective college biology teaching, productive research and research mentoring, and scholarly service; good interpersonal skills; and commitment to the integration of faith and learning. The specific field of expertise is negotiable, but the successful candidate will demonstrate ability to teach broadly in biology.
Qualifications summary
- PhD in biology or related discipline
- Record of teaching college-level biology
- Research track-record with publications, and mentoring of others (preferably students)
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Duties and responsibilities
The faculty member will fulfill all duties expected in an academic posiiton. These include effective performance in the following areas:
- Teach assigned courses and regularly review and improve their teaching.
- Initiate and maintain a research program that leads to publication.
- Mentor undergraduate and graduate students in research, including presentation and publication of the results.
- Maintain regular office hours and respond in a timely way to student communication.
- Carry a normal advising and recruiting load for the department and communicate effectively with advisees and recruits.
- Participate in professional service to the department, school, and where appropriate professional societies.
- Integrate faith and learning in the context of Seventh-day Adventist faith.

Qualifications
Normal language, cultural, interpersonal, and technical competencies needed to teach, mentor, advise, and conduct and publish research with students in the biological sciences, and participate in effective service to the department and school. These include:
- Broad knowledge of biology, and deep knowledge in areas of specialization
- Motivation to maintain an active research program alongside normal teaching and service activities
- Ability to communicate fluently in English
- Ability to interact effectively with persons with diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds, especially students and peers, and to inspire all to give their best
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Technical competencies
General competencies with computers, technical equipment, etc. needed for teaching and conducting research in biology.
Interpersonal interactions
Demonstrated capacity to foster growth and development students as a teacher, advisor, and mentor, and to manage interpersonal conflicts in a productive way.
Physical demands
The successful candidate will have sufficient physical ability to meet the normal needs of a faculty position in biology. These include:
- Ability to work at a computer or desk for multiple hours per day in course preparation, writing, and grading. This requires ability to use a keyboard for up to multiple hours per day.
- Ability to stand, speak, and move around a lecture room and laboratory for two or more hours without a break
- Ability to walk for a mile or more without a break when leading field trips
- Ability to routinely climb two flights of stairs in the Science Complex to navigate between office, classrooms, and teaching and research laboratories.
- Ability to travel off-site as required for professional development and research, including stays of 3 or more days at at time
- Efforts will be made to provide reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities
Work environment
Normal office, laboratory, and classroom environments. Hazards will depend on nature of the research in the candidate's lab, and laboratory teaching protocols utilized.
