Position summary
The Oracle database administrator (DBA) manages the Oracle database/middleware that is the foundation of the University's Ellucian Banner ERP system. The DBA plans, tests, and implements changes to the database in consultation with the Director of ITS Administrative Systems and end users, including planning for expansion and growth, security, optimization, and backup/recovery planning & testing. The DBA also deploys new versions of the Ellucian Banner software that runs on the Oracle database.

Duties and responsibilities
- Monitors database availability and schedules maintenance times as needed in co-ordination with Director and requirements of the institution.
- Reviews security patches and tests and installs security patches.
- Configures database parameters for optimal performance.
- Collaborates with system administrators on database server issues. Provides input on database server configuration (hardware or virtual machine requirements) in consultation with Director and ITS Servers & Networks personnel.
- Analyzes and debugs database code that is broken or not following business rules. Troubleshoots errors generated by in-house or vendor provided software.
- Performs data integrity analysis of data in database and recommends best-practices to be followed by end users to maintain database data quality.
- Monitors database performance metrics such as tablespace usage, query performance, locking contention and other performance indicators. Re-organizes and tunes database as situations warrant.
- Monitors operating system and database server to identify potential issues and maintain database availability. Works with ITS Servers and Networks staff to configure RDBMS server for optimal performance.
- Maintains user database roles and user priviledges.
- Advises programming staff on best practices for accessing the database.
- Reviews descriptions of database updates as provided by Ellucian and installs the updates.
- Keeps documentation updated to prevent it from becoming irrelevant.
- Trains users and answers user questions.
- Assists in testing and deployment of Banner upgrades.
- In collaboration with UNIX system administrator, installs, upgrades, and configures application servers (Oracle Forms, Oracle Fusion Middleware, Oracle database server, and Banner).
- Assists in developing and testing plans for Banner upgrades and co-ordinates testing schedule with end-user departments.
- Provides advice on best practices for leveraging Banner software and processes.
- Participates in recommending standard practices for entering data into the Oracle database.
- Provides guidance and recommendations to the Director on database issues.
- Resolves data issues with bad data contained within the database.
- Other duties as assigned.
Supervisory responsibilities
This position does not supervise any employees.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university. One or two years related experience in database administration and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior Banner environment experience a plus.
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
