Position summary

Plans and conducts an external media relations program focused on traditional and social media channels, while also editing and creating key electronic and print communication pieces for the internal Andrews University audience which will include, but not be limited to, broadcast emails, Agenda, FOCUS magazine and major portions of the website homepage.

Qualifications summary

Applicant should have a bachelor’s degree in writing-related field (English, communication or journalism preferred), with a minimum of 3–5 years related experience, ideally in communications or public relations fields. Experience in higher education a plus, as well as experience and proficiency with news style writing, preferably AP style.

Applicant should also have extensive experience with major social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube.


Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Duties and responsibilities

Serves a key role in coordinating social media communication, including potential guidance/oversight to/for other social media channels on campus. This task includes news and information dissemination via social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and use of Hootsuite Enterprise, as well as creative production of inspirational, educational, fun and engaging content. (25%)

Plans and directs development and communication of information designed to keep public informed of the University’s mission, programs, accomplishments and/or point of view. This includes monitoring campus, local and church media to keep various audiences informed and responding or distributing as appropriate, and use of traditional media monitoring platforms. Identifies and builds relationship with local media representatives (20%)

Collects information on campus news stories either by solicitation of departments, or by information provided independently by departments, then writes and/or assigns these stories for dissemination. (15%)

Contributes and maintains news, events and features on the University’s website. (15%)

Collects, writes, edits and distributes pertinent campus information via broadcast email, Andrews Agenda and social media, and helps refine delivery system of internal communication. Responsible for administrative messages sent via email for the president, provost and VPs, in addition to important campus emails from HR, Plant Services and Campus Safety. (5%)

As with other key members of the IMC team, a process of networking with resources, both internally and externally, is a key assignment. The Media Communications Manager and others within IMC need to build relationships across campus and throughout the community that are relevant to our marketing and communication needs as a whole, and as they specifically relate to relevant networks for this position’s specific media communication needs. (5%)

Provides material for submission to various critical church media outlets, including FOCUS, Lake Union Herald (monthly, and an annual Andrews issue) and Adventist Review. Routinely communicates key events and information to local churches, both Adventist and non-Adventist. (5%)

Assists administration in crisis communication. This includes collaborating in the evelopment/maintenance of an overall crisis communication plan and, specifically, announcing weather-related cancellations and making emergency notifications through a partnership with Campus Safety. (2%)

Continued understanding and monitoring of LinkedIn, Snapchat, Pinterest and other prominent and emerging social media channels to continue to understand how these channels—when resources and strategies allow—might be used to further communicate the Andrews University message. (2%)

Prepares and distributes information to media representatives in order to effectively communicate the University’s activities, messages and/our mission. (2%)

Fields questions from media on news items and general inquiries, and provides liaison between media and campus experts. Identifies and builds relationship with vital church media representatives. (2%)

Analyzes and augments media placement, seeking new and appropriate media outlets that will build the understanding and appreciation of Andrews University. (2%)

Assigns and edits stories delegated to student news writers. (2%)

Supervisory responsibilities

Typically supervises 1-2 student writers during the school year and a full-time student writer or intern during the summer

Work style accommodates collaborating well with other colleagues and supervise student employees to achieve multiple ongoing assignments, as well as the ability to work independently. This position works regularly and directly with nearly every member of the IMC team.

Must be able to adjust and respond to difficult situations gracefully and directly.

Communication activities, responses and support can and will occur outside of regular work hours, including weekends.

Must be personable and a good ambassador for Andrews University.

Physical demands

Must be physically able to sustatin a regular workload of 40-50 hours per week in an office environment. Typically, no heavy lifting is necessary.

Work environment

The media communications manager has a private office that includes work stations for student employees. Though there may be some interruptions, ordinarily it is a quiet work environment. Very little to no travel is required for this position.
